A metaphor, therefore...

Explanation:
Metaphors aren't always 'translatable' and here there is insufficient context. But I doubt very much that this one can be translated literally. Without the sense, it's difficult to furnish a functional equivalent - what you need to do is explain the general sense, then that jogs a native's memory. Possibilities could be - One has to look out for oneself/look after No. 1(very colloquial)? Blow one's own trumpet(in the sense that one is imagining wonderful things for /about oneself)? Concentrate on 'dream' in the widest possible sense, and fit it into the contextual sense of the text. I'm afraid I can come up with no further ideas.

Nobody can dream on more than himself...

Explanation:
I don´t think you will ever find one that suits you completely, but I like this one. The meaning, like the Spanish version, is ambiguous. Hope it helps!

No one can dream a dream larger than his dream of himself.

Explanation:
I agree with the comments of the answerer who invoked metaphor. The idea -- and context may confirm this -- is that one's ambitions are contained and constrained within the image one has of oneself. I was on vacation when this was posted and came late to it, but the idea is very attractive and I wanted to contribute.
