By the way, sounds like your penpal writes a bit "in a rush", doesn't he/she? The correct phrase should be "espero que esté muy bien". If your penpal is LatinAmerican or addressing you with a courtesy form, it means "hope you are fine/OK", regarding health et similia. Hope it helped!
