Kellie
English translation:close / related...
Explanation:
Dear Kellie,

it may mean two things:

-That those small rivers are close to the others

-That they are connected to them, as in an affluent.

Anyway, there is this sense of "closeness"/"relativeness".

Hope it helps!

gathered/together

Explanation:
Hello,

Flavio is right as for the general sense of the word, but I think that here it refers not to the rivers but to people once they die. In any case, the whole stanza tells us about death by means of this beautiful metaphor of the rivers flowing into the see, but I'd just like remark it in order to help you understand these verses more precisely.

"Allegados" means here "gathered", i.e. the Rich and the Poor meet and are equal in death, so a very rough translation could be "(once) together (or gathered, that is, once dead) the Poor and the Rich are equal". It becomes clearer if you see the original punctuation for these verses (their author is Jorge Manrique, one of the first Castilian poets (XVI th century).

I'm copying also a translation into English for these Coplas. I dont really like this old-fashioned version, but this is the only one I could find.

Luck!

"Nuestras vidas son los ríos
que van a dar en la mar,
que es el morir:
allí van los señoríos
derchos a se acabar
y consumir;
allí los ríos caudales,
allí los otros medianos
y más chicos:
allegados, son iguales
los que viven por sus manos
y los ricos."

"Our lives are fated as the rivers
That gather downward to the sea
We know as Death;
And thither every flood delivers
The pride and pomp of seigniory
That forfeiteth;

Thither, the rivers in their splendor;
Thither, the streams of modest worth,—
The rills beside them;
Till there all equal they surrender;
And so with those who toil on earth,
And those who guide them."
