  -> Se trata de que en el primer capítulo cuenta cómo los demás murieron en el mar, y luego sigue la novela siendo él el único superviviente. Tambien opté por tu traducción hasta que leí el capítulo. El escritor era colombiano,expresan diferente a España. :)

Este es el título del primer capítulo de la novela de García Márquez. En este capítulo el naúfrago nos va a contar "cómo eran sus compañeros muertos en el mar", no "cómo murieron".

El problema de esta traducción es el Sujeto "mis compañeros muertos en el mar", un Sujeto muy largo. En español se puede poner el verbo delante, pero en inglés no. Si lo traducimos literalmente sonaría extraño en inglés: "How my shipmates died at sea were".

Por lo tanto hay que buscar una manera de expresar la misma idea con otra construcción y es la que te ofrezco.
También puedes decir " The way my shipmates were before they died at sea". Y también "The way my shipmates were prior to their dying at sea".

Otras versiones libres para el título y que me parecen más apropiadas :

"My shipmates who died at sea"
"Those shipmates of mine who died at sea"

Creo que se sobreentiende "eran" porque murieron. Y creo que se sobreentiende también que va a hablar de ellos.
Siempre prefiero plasmar la idea y que no parezca una traducción.

Dado que se trata de un título, es un enunciado de lo que sigue.
También se puede decir "How my comrades who died at sea were", pero creo que en inglés suena mejor lo primero.
