Spanish term or phrase: un adolescente descontextualizado
This is part of a reference letter:

La impresión inicial fue de un adolescente descontextualizado, porque procediendo de los Estados Unidos, se hallaba en un país convulso política, económica y socialmente hablando,

a decontextualized adolescent
Explanation:
For reasons of his own, the writer favored stylistic flair over lucidity. "Decontextualized" appealed to the writer's literary sensibilities, and he chose to use it, most likely knowing the risks he was taking.

To reduce this ungodly adjective in translation to a more accessible phrase would amount to willful mutilation, a sort of literary liposuction, robbing the writer of his over-fattened writing, which, we must assume, he cherished.

"Decontextualized" is quite a mouthful, even in its proper domain, let alone when used to describe a teenager. But that is precisely what the writer wanted. Interpretive activism has its place, but so does faithfulness to the text. It behooves the translator to know when to favor this and when to favor that. In this particular instance, taking interpretive liberties would be a breach.

17 hrs
a disconcerted adolescent

Explanation:
Since this is a reference letter, I feel "disconcerted" portrays the confusion due to lack of reference points without deviating too far from the source text. However, "a confused teenager" might be more to the point.

1 day 3 mins
descontextualizado - out of context / out of environment

Explanation:
The teenager seems to feel lost because he does not know the habits and customs of the place he is living right now. He is therefore out of context, out of the environment that he knows.

I hope it helps...
