Exactly as in original. How could I translate *** ? - it will sound tacky if translated more or less literally.

English translation:for what it's worth
Explanation:
I'd play around with it a little and either use a combination of... or simply one of..- the following:

For what that is worth, for better or worse, the lesser of two evils, etc.

I certainly agree that a literal translation sounds awful...

Cheers,

Berni

Thanks to everyone, but I think I will risk an idiomatic expression of this kind rather than a literal translation (it's a 'scientific text, can you belive it?!)

good or bad, better or worse within the limits of good quality

Explanation:
I think saying it it in this way helps to make the phrase sound less ambiguous... I don't know if it sounds unnatural... Hope it gives some ideas.

well or badly, and tending...

Explanation:
... in which the \"rules\" are established -- well or badly, and tending to better or worse within what is well-done -- visually and rather qualitatively; the difficulty of quantifying, in terms of concrete results, the combination of...

The way I see it, what is being described is the verb \"established\" and not any noun/pronoun/gerund in sight. You may have something in another part of the text, but so far I only see the need for adverbs, not adjectives.

'for better or for worse, until death due us apart" ;o)

Explanation:
"good or bad or better or worst within the classification of good".

"Specify good or bad or within the classification of good, elaborate (or expand) as to whether is better or worst."

Just a few random thoughts!
