Se basa en el registro de la variación con el tiempo del espectro visible de los productos de la **azo-copulación oxidativa** que tiene lugar entre las sulfonamidas y la 3-methyl-2-benzothiazolone hydrazone (MBTH) en presencia de Fe(III) como agente oxidante. Las condiciones experimentales se han encontrado estudiando la variación del comportamiento de cada sulfonamida por separado, al variar simultáneamente las variables experimentales más influyentes (acidez y concentración de Fe(III)), y definiendo una función de respuesta (índice de discriminación) que tiene en cuenta tanto la semejanza espectral como cinética entre cada par de analitos."
