On the edge of... (see below)

Explanation:
I think "canon" should have been cañon here. So it would then read "On the edge of the Urubamba canyon, at the base of which...." But as MP is not at the base of a canyon, but rather near the top of a mountain, I'd have to see the context to be really sure of the last half of my offering :-)

Maybe a Peruvian translator.. or a well travelled English speaker might help you further :-)

Bordering the Urubamba canyon through whose base

Explanation:
Also, bordering the Urubamba canyon through which...
This is the literal translation but more context would be helpful.

[Standing/set ] on the rim of the Urubamba canyon, above its depths where...

Explanation:
This rendering is based on a lot of suppositions. I suspect, while not having the whole context, that the visual perspective is from Machu Picchu, looking down over the rim of the canyon. And that the *por cuyo fondo* continues with mention of sighting something below, probably moving along the bottom (since *por*, combined with a noun denoting a physical spade, indicates movement *through* that space). Of course, rather than actually sighting something present, it could be memory of things/activities past (like crews pushing those stones up the slopes...)

"Perched on the rim of the Urubamba gorge, through whose depths..." [winds a road or river...]

Explanation:
I suggest "gorge" rather than the more literal "canyon," because gorges, which are steeper and narrower than canyons, are more in keeping with the geography of the northern Andes.
