I submitted this question but from the answer I didn't really understand how to translate 'la ley de' en reference to metals other than gold or silver.

Could somebody possibly translate the entire 'la ley en alúmina o en álcalis' ?

English translation:The purity [of the metal] in terms of the admixture of aluminum and alkalis is
Explanation:
determined entirely by natural differentiation in ....

This is only a guess from the context available:
'Cobre de alta ley' would be 'high-purity copper'.
Hence, 'ley en alumina o en alkalis' must mean 'purity in terms of [the admixture of] alumina and alkalis'

Good luck!

Explanation:
the metal... it is the standard used.

For instance gold can be of 14 karate, 18 karate or 22 karates....

You could use the word standard.

Just a thought.

Hope they are some chemists or jewelers out there that can give you a better explanation.

the purity / quantity of metal in alumina or alkali

Explanation:
the translation for "ley" was fineness or quantity of metal (in ore), that´s why I put the 2 meanings but I´m not in the field to know which to choose.
