OR

DOUBLE A EN<>ES
nominal
Explanation:
I think you want "nominal." Here is what OSHA has on the diameter of pipes:

OSHA Directives - Table of Contents

Record Type: Instruction
Directive Number: STD 1-1.1
Subject: Defining the Term "Nominal Diameter"
Information Date: 10/30/1978

OSHA Instruction STD 1-1.1
October 30, 1978

March 23, 1972

OSHA PROGRAM DIRECTIVE #100-4

To: National and Field Offices

Subject: Defining the Term "Nominal Diameter"

1. Purpose. To clarify the use of the term "nominal diameter" in
Section 1910.23(e)(3)(ii), and to direct answers to inquiries.

2. Background. This requirement establishes the size of pipe acceptable for use in the construction of guard rails. Numerous requests for clarification have been received, principally from employers and field staff.

3. Interpretation. The term "Nominal Diameter" when used to describe the size (diameter) of pipe used in construction of standard railings and posts means the outside diameter. The requirements that pipe railings and posts shall be at least one and one-half inches nominal diameter means that the outside diameter of such shall be not less than one and one-half inches.

Here is what LGDT has on "nominal":

(1) [Specifically for Plumbing]
nominal (acd)
Synonyme(s):
rated (aefh)

(2) rated (a)
Qualifying term applied to a quantity which is used in the specification of a machine or an apparatus. (a)

And here is what Termium has:

English:Aeronautical Engineering and Maintenance
Aircraft Propulsion Systems
rated s CORRECT
OBS - Input. s
1990-09-07

Note that LGDT also has, for "dimension nominale":

(1) basic size (a)
The size by reference to which the limits of size are fixed ( without "The"). The theorical size of a dimension on which the limits of size, and the design sizes, for that dimension are based. (a)
Note(s): >< nominal size; >< design size. (a)

(2) nominal size (a)
A dimension used as an indication, subject to variation under differing working conditions, or according to given tolerances. (a)
