Explanation:
A guard wire is a grounded conductor that is placed beneath an overhead power transmission line, in order to ground the line (if the line breaks) before the line reaches the ground. Guard wires come from the factory in the form of rigid segments, which must be "placed in deflection" (that is, given the appropriate shape) before they are installed on the towers that support the aerial power lines.
