Palabra escocesa de origen incierto, cuando el término "Collie" forma parte del nombre de la raza, generalmente se acepta que hace referencia a la función del animal como “perro de pastoreo”. Algunos autores aseguran que deriva de la pronunciación “coaley” referido a las ovejas de cara negra que se encuentran en Escocia. Otros consideran que hace referencia a un término gaélico que significaba “algo útil”. También se cree que puede provenir del **escocés temprano** “col” que significa negro.
