Si vamos reduciendo la estructura cristalina llegamos a un límite, que es la unidad del edificio cristalino y que presenta todos sus elementos característicos en las tres direcciones del espacio. Es lo que se conoce como celda fundamental. La disposición de los átomos que forman la celda fundamental es cerrada y su repetición tridimensional forma una red de puntos que caracteriza a cada mineral.
