∆εύτερο σηµαντικό µόριο είναι το κεραµίδιο (ceramide) που κυρίως
προέρχεται από την υδρόλυση της σφιγγοµυελίνης (του κυριότερου λιπιδίου των κυτταρικών µεµβρανών). Η παραγωγή του επάγεται είτε από το κυτταρικό stress λόγω ακτινοβολίας, ΧΜΘ ή απόσυρση αυξητικών παραγόντων είτε από προαποπτωτικά σήµατα µέσω υποδοχέων θανάτου όπως CD95 ή TNF-R και οδηγεί σε απόπτωση του κυττάρου.
