Swedish term or phrase: flerårig
Innan dess hade han hunnit med en flerårig popkarriär i gruppen.....

is there not a single word in English for this, anything but perennial?
or how about "a career spanning many years"?
having said that, "spanning" would normally precede a much longer timeframe, like decades or centuries?

English translation:a short career/ starting his young career/ career of several years
Explanation:
Look, seems like you are slavishly trying to hold to the Swe. The thing is this is lite pop/marketing BS, and the Swe is confused about how long a 'career' is. In Eng it implies more years than 'several' years, I'd say, but this is fluff.
So you have to find the same level of BS for your translation. Here's a hint: Look up the band ur writing about to see exactly how long their 'career' has been. Then u can understand what the Swe BS is saying -- you should be able to BS in Eng at about the same level of exactness without having to consider what the writer means with the 'flerårig' term. As my example, which is only a general suggestion
