Swedish term or phrase: FNL:are och flummare
A 55 year old character in a young adult novel is talking about the late sixties and early seventies in Malmö. I need a translation or description for the terms that will make sense to an American teenager today:

"Jag var en vild unge. Jag hade haft killar sedan jag var tretton. Jag var med i alla vänstergrupper som fanns, det var så jag träffat Per förresten, det fanns två sorters ungdomar på dden tiden, FNL:are och flummare, jag tillhörde FNL:arna förstås..."

Vietniks and hippies
Explanation:
In the US, they were not Vietcongs themselves but just the dirt-bags kids who supported the Vietcong, ...Vietniks. They called themselves, "peaceniks" as well, but in the context you want to portray, use vietniks. A Google search will help you

Viet cong and druggies

Explanation:
Front National de Liberte - group of people who joined in the northvietnam army against southvietnam and the US supported government and also against the US troops in the country. In the US they were also called Viet cong.

Flummare= somebody doing drugs.

supporters of VC and hippies/bum(mer)s

Explanation:
A "flummare" is not necessarily smbdy doing drugs though it could surely be part of the picture.
I admit it is difficult to translate "flummare".
And one should probably specify that the people were ideological "supporters" of VC rather than a direct part of the organisation.

agree  Marie Andersson (Allen): I'm with vietniks, but prefer potheads to hippies!

  -> Potheads perhaps, but with the same reservation that Mårten pointed out.

agree  arvendal: Jag gillar Vietniks (även Prismas Am. slang översätter så), men Hippies träffar inte rätt. Jag håller på Pot heads.
