I have a text starting "Bästa patient!", which is supposed to mean "Dear patient" in English, but I am not sure that it does mean this as I would expect to see "Kära patient!". Can "Bästa " also mean "Dear"?

Dear mr/mrs/ms/miss/patient
Explanation:
Jag använder regelbundet Dear till diverse manliga leverantörer och kunder som jag absolut inte har något annat förhållande till än strikt affärsmässigt (allts inga vänskapsförbindelser)

agree  EKM: Yes, this is a case where you have to look at actual usage, and not at "meaning" - to use "kära" in Swedish implies more "love" than in English, where an erosion of meaning has made "Dear" a neutral word. I always translate "dear customer" as "bäste kund"

agree  Terese Whitty: Dear används definitivt mest som hövlig hälsningsfras.

agree  Mario Marcolin: Dear would cover Bästa AND Kära; ""Kära patient!" implies a somewhat more informal relation than "Bästa kund" :)
