slide rule
Explanation:
An instrument used for multiplication in the times before computers and pocket calculators. The principle was to add log calibrated distances on two rulers, one sliding inside the other. Various dictionaries proffer translations which were never in use in the English language. The one which was used was "slide rule". I know, because I am geriatric and worked with slide rules in my youth!
