shrinkage joint Explanation: London Borough of Ealing Building Control Services INFORMATION SHEET NO.1 SOLID BLOCKWORK EXTERNAL WALLS Solid blockwork external walls with a rendered finish will be considered acceptable under Building Regulations subject to the following:- If the wall is more than 3.0m in length, a shrinkage joint must be provided at not more than 3.0m 1. from any corner. Ideally, the joint should be incorporated at approximately the mid-point of the wall and be positioned up against a door frame. It is not necessary for joints to go below DPC level, but they must extend the full height of the wall. Additional joints are required where the continuous length of the blockwork would otherwise exceed 6 metres.
