وُہ

Urdu term or phrase: وُہ
My understanding is that this word is a demonstrative pronoun used for things that are far from the speaker (that or those) but that it is also used where English would use a third person pronoun (he, she, it or they). Is وُہ always used as the third person pronoun? or would you only use it for things that are far away, and use the other demonstrative (this/these) as a pronoun for things that are near to the speaker?

Both; see explanation

Explanation:
وُہ is used for a third person pronoun as well as for things that are relatively far from you.

یہ is the antonym of it.

I mean "یہ is the antonym of it" for refering to things relatively nearer.

With regard to "he saw the dog" وُہ will not work here. Its translation will be "US Nay Aik Kuta Dekha". But with regard to "He is man or she is a woman" وُہ will verily be the word to be used.

Notes to answerer
Asker: Thanks! So for example, if you were translating the English sentence "he saw the dog", you would use وُہ to translate "he" if the person was relatively far from you but یہ to translate "he" if the person was relatively close to you?

وہ is used for third person when away from the speaker. It is also used for "that".

Example sentence(s):
  • کیا آج کی رات وہ آئے گی
  • میں سوچتا ہوں کیا وہ اپنا وعدہ نباہے گی
