Urdu term or phrase: yaar
found it in the novels of Hanif Kureishi and Salman Rushdie. I suppose it is an adage and untranslatable, but don't know if I am correct.
atanja
Friend, pal
Explanation:
'Yaar' means 'friend/pal'. This would be the usual sense in Rushdie/Kureishi. True of Midnight's Children. Also of other texts. 'Yaar' is a kind of pan-Indian word. Also found in Hindi, Gujarati. Found in Hindi movies. Can have a derogatory connotation in the sense of 'someone being a yaar of a woman' would entail a slur on the woman's character. But Rushdie/Kureishi would use it more in the neutral sense, as pal or friend.
