Sao in Vietnamese is like a lot of small English words - small word, many meanings.
On its own, sao can mean:
1) star, stars or starry;
2) fat;
3) transcribe, copy; or
4) how, in what manner, why (i.e. a question form).
However, it is also an important part of many compound words in Vietnamese (where 2 individual words are combined to produce a third meaning).
The 2 most common usages are 1, 3 and 4 above (in that order).
