Businessweek lists translation as the 3rd best career for 2011

Well, it's a good news for translators, I think. Hopefully they will be more proud of themselves, and more prosperous, too.
What factors do they take into account to make these studies?
I just noticed that is not the 3rd best career according to this study, but the 3rd worst in the study, the first one being a Massage Therapist. The 3rd best career would be mediator.

Exactly! Translation is 3rd from the BOTTOM. At least, if measured by the income per year.
But still - it is among the 10 best!

I don't think the author has really thought about the order, and the professions kind of "listed themselves" by median salary (bottom to top). In this sense, the headline here looks like over-interpretation of something trivial. Don't enquire about criteria or scientific justification of the job pick, or how the figures relate to the number of hours. It's more of a an "act of daily journalism", as Gus Haynes from the TV series The WireThe Wire would put it.
