Dear all,

I sometimes got irritating grammatical suggestion when I work with MSWord (I am using Office 2003). For example, just now I typed "the committee will be responsible for ..." and then the words "committee will" were underlined green. When I right-clicked those words , two suggestions appeared: "committee wills" and "committees will". Perhaps this is not a big deal but still it irritates me.

I wonder if anyone has ever had this kind of experience with MSWord.<

Yes, Indra, I used to get really fed up with the stupid "corrections" of my grammar. I reckon my grammar is a good deal better than Microsoft's attempts and I don't need its help. I discovered that you can disable the grammar function completely while retaining the spellcheck function.
Best wishes,
Jenny.

I ignore grammar corrections May 7, 2007

I do not find Word's grammar corrections particularly useful and ignore any green squiggly lines that appear. In other words, I have disabled the function conceptually, if not physically.

I’m not sure I’d disable it completely. Every now and then it does actually tell you something useful. I agree though with the comments above; many times the “corrections” are useless and irritating.

Disable it right away! May 7, 2007

I never use the 'as-you-type' correction facilities anyway, but I certainly find that the MS grammar checker is worse than useless, totally unable to cope with any level of sophistication in the language beyond "the cat sat on the mat" — if I don't disable it, my entire text practically becomes a sea of wiggly green underlines! And I'm not that bad at English, I can assure you!

Totally agree May 7, 2007

For me the grammar assistant couldn't be worse. Either in Spanish or in English.
You need to go to tools, spelling and grammar (I am not sure this is the way it is called in English, I have the Spanish version) and then click "options" and uncheck the corresponding box.
Probably you already did or knew this, but just in case...

Write to MS May 7, 2007

Write to Microsoft and tell them they need to form an Office Applications Review group, and tell them you hope this "committees will" revise their grammatical suggestions.
Maybe they'll get the hint.
Good luck,
Arturo
