Two years ago, I started organizing Powwow meetings in hope of building up a freelancer translators' network in Taiwan. However, it is well known that every one of us is mostly business with our own jobs and it is quite impossible to have a network for information and buisness. Sporadic cooperations are possible, but not well organized ones.
We had the first meeting concerning an Association for Freelancer Translators in Taiwan. It failed. We had the second meeting concerning CAT tools and it was all right. We had the third meeting concerning how to manage projects and it was all right as well. Some of Taiwanese translators are cooperating now in some projects.
However, the cooperation remains in small scale. With bigger projects, there is still no freelancers' cooperation. Most of us still tap in the darkness and let the agencies do the coordination of projects.
If we can do the coordination of projects on our own, we will be able to take on bigger projects and push the small scale networking into real project teams.
The discussion about project management in the last meeting was fruitful. There have been some smaller projects well handled by small teams of freelancers. Why not step forward and take on bigger projects?
What I intend to brainstorm with you will be the methods to collect market information, the methods to build up and develop workteams and the methods to coordinate projects, especially the bigger project, say over 100,000 source words.
I hope that there will be more participation and I would like to share my experiences in these respects.
