Source text - English Herty Lewites
Question: You are in some ways an accidental candidate. How will you carry on Herty’s legacy and what do you say to your opponents who claim to the ones to carry on his legacy?
Strategy:
Though it is time for Mundo to move away from Herty’s legacy and to establish himself as a serious contender in his own right, Mundo should not back away from embracing Herty and remind voters that he is the one candidate that can carry on Herty’s dream if the opportunity arises.
Answer:
Herty Lewites was a great man. I was very proud to have been selected by him to be his running mate. His tragic death was a loss not just for our political movement and a personal loss for his family, but for our nation. If I learned one thing from Herty, it was that no matter how difficult the situation, it is vital to move forward and look to the future, not the past.
Herty chose me to be his running mate because we shared the same values and had the same vision for our country. He chose me because of my dedication to fighting poverty and my understanding of how to create jobs for our country. Like Herty, I am deeply committed to change and I am deeply committed to fulfilling his legacy.
Abortion
Question: You support therapeutic abortion, in spite of the Church’s opposition. Nicaragua is a Catholic country. Shouldn’t abortion be illegal?
Strategy:
Abortion is an issue that can win Mundo votes, especially among winnable and in reach voters, but it must be addressed as part of a larger narrative. The abortion issue in and of itself is not important enough to people.
If the issue is brought up in the debate, it will be an opportunity to show that Mundo is different than the other candidates. Our polls show that Mundo’s position on therapeutic abortions is in line with a majority of Nicaraguans, a fact that none of the other candidates have picked up on.
Though Mundo’s position is in line with most Nicaraguan’s views, Mundo must make it clear that he supports therapeutic abortion because of the importance of saving a pregnanta woman’s life if she is in danger.
Answer: Change can be hard. It requires taking on powerful interests – like corrupt politicians and businesses that don’t pay their taxes. And it also means expressing your honest differences with institutions you admire and trust. In this case, I have a different position than the Catholic Church. I support the current law, which allows for therapeutic abortions when a pregnant woman’s life is at risk. Other politicians seem to be afraid to support this sensible law, which has been arond for 100 years. I won’t be; I will bring real change.
Linked to FSLN
Question: You say you offer change and a clear break from the past. But you are an ex Sandinista, your running mate is an ex-Sandinista and your campaign team is filled with ex Sandinistas. How does this really mean change?
Strategy:
Attacks on Mundo’s past links to the FSLN can be turned into an advantage if handled correctly. The key lies in being clear about the reasons why Carlos and Mundo left and focusing on the ideals and values that attracted you to Sandinismo and how those are still important today.
Answer:
I believed then, and I believe now that the Revolution was a worthy cause. Unfortunately, it was betrayed by Daniel and his allies who were more interested in enriching themselves than helping the people. Today, Daniel Ortega is one of the wealthiest men in Nicaragua, while the people are as poor as ever. The Piñata and the pacto sucio have caused terrible damage to our country. Carlos and I left the FSLN because Daniel corrupted the democratic values and the social equality that we believe in. We had the strength then to speak out against these injustices and we have the strength now to move forward and bring change to our country after so many years of failed policies and corrupt governments. Together our party will create a vibrant, strong Nicaragua that all Nicaraguans – not just a privileged few - can enjoy.
Out of touch with the people
Question: You have spent much of the past two decades outside Nicaragua. Do you really understand the needs of Nicaraguan voters?
Strategy:
Mundo should focus on his dedication to social justice as a way of countering the perception/accusation that he is out of touch with the people.
Mundo needs to highlight his achievements and talk about the values that motivated him to take these actions and that will motivate him as president.
Mundo should tie the history of corruption with a lack of priority for average Nicaraguans; the greatest perpetrators of social injustice are those who unfairly steal money from the people of Nicaragua.
As was the case with poverty, social justice is another area where Carlos should be mentioned. Carlos is seen as someone who genuinely cares about people. That is why Mundo chose him, he should say. Let’s remind people that he is on the ticket and will play a prominent role in the Jarquin Administration.
Answer: I have a very deep love for our country. I have dedicated my life to social justice for all Nicaraguans. In 1998, Hurricane Mitch devastated our country. I worked with local leaders to help obtain donations to build 250 houses. I founded the country’s first social organization to support education, rural development, and microempresas.
Herty Lewites chose me as his running mate and I have chosen Carlos Mejia Godoy as mine because we all shared a common belief that justice, peace and democracy are vital to our country’s future. As president I promise to defend these values for all Nicaraguans. Carlos and I will stand up for the rights of our people, for their health, for their education, for their well-being, so that every Nicaraguan can lead a safe and dignified and life and so that our children can have the hope of a brighter future. What Nicaraguans want is change and that is what we are offering them.
