Source text - English a castle of Westphalia, belonging to the Baron of Thunder-ten-Tronckh, lived a youth, whom nature had endowed with the most gentle manners. His countenance was a true picture of his soul. He combined a true judgment with simplicity of spirit, which was the reason, I apprehend, of his being called Candide. The old servants of the family suspected him to have been the son of the Baron's sister, by a good, honest gentleman of the neighborhood, whom that young lady would never marry because he had been able to prove only seventy-one quarterings, the rest of his genealogical tree having been lost through the injuries of time.
The Baron was one of the most powerful lords in Westphalia, for his castle had not only a gate, but windows. His great hall, even, was[Pg 2] hung with tapestry. All the dogs of his farm-yards formed a pack of hounds at need; his grooms were his huntsmen; and the curate of the village was his grand almoner. They called him "My Lord," and laughed at all his stories.
The Baron's lady weighed about three hundred and fifty pounds, and was therefore a person of great consideration, and she did the honours of the house with a dignity that commanded still greater respect. Her daughter Cunegonde was seventeen years of age, fresh-coloured, comely, plump, and desirable. The Baron's son seemed to be in every respect worthy of his father. The Preceptor Pangloss[1] was the oracle of the family, and little Candide heard his lessons with all the good faith of his age and character.
Pangloss was professor of metaphysico-theologico-cosmolo-nigology. He proved admirably that there is no effect without a cause, and that, in this best of all possible worlds, the Baron's castle was the most magnificent of castles, and his lady the best of all possible Baronesses.
"It is demonstrable," said he, "that things cannot be otherwise than as they are; for all being created for an end, all is necessarily for the best end. Observe, that the nose has been formed to bear spectacles—thus we have spectacles. Legs are visibly designed for stockings[Pg 3]—and we have stockings. Stones were made to be hewn, and to construct castles—therefore my lord has a magnificent castle; for the greatest baron in the province ought to be the best lodged. Translation - Indonesian Dalam sebuah puri di Westphalia, milik Baron Thunder-ten-Tronckh, hidup seorang pemuda yang diberkati alam dengan perilaku yang begitu lembut. Wajahnya adalah suatu gambaran nyata jiwanya. Dia gabungkan keputusan yang jujur dengan kesederhanaan jiwa, dan inilah mengapa, menurut hemat saya, dia dipanggil Candide. Jakarta, Kompas – Sah-sah saja jika setiap kandidat calon presiden-calon wakil presiden, terutama yang pernah ataupun sedang menjabat sebagai incumbent, mencoba mengklaim keberhasilan soal apa yang telah dikerjakannya.
Demikian dikemukakan peneliti senior Lembaga Ilmu Pengetahuan Indonesia (LIPI), Ikrar Nusa Bhakti, Senin (15/6). Pernyataan itu disampaikan Ikrar menanggapi aksi saling klaim keberhasilan oleh para kandidat, mulai dari soal pembangunan Jembatan Surabaya-Madura (Suramadu) hingga terkait upaya damai dalam perjanjian (MOU) Helsinki antara Indonesia dan Gerakan Aceh Merdeka (GAM).
Menurut Ikrar, sepanjang mereka memang melakukan atau terlibat dalam pembuatan kebijakannya, sedikit apa pun, boleh mengklaim. Yang tidak boleh dilakukan adalah jika klaim tersebut berisi kebohongan. Dalam artian, capres-cawapres tersebut mengklaim apa yang tidak dilakukannya.
“Justru bagus malah dengan aksi saling klaim seperti itu kita sebagai masyarakat jadi bisa tahu dengan jelas bagaimana sebenarnya suatu kebijakan dihasilkan. Bagaimana kinerja dan cara kerja pemerintah saat suatu kebijakan dibuat. Justru bisa membuka mata public,” ujar Ikrar.

Translation - English Taking Credits Will Open Public’s Eyes
SBY and JK respectively take credit for Aceh Peace Agreement
Jakarta, Kompas – It is apparently not unlawful for each presidential-vice presidential candidates, particularly who had been in office or is currently an incumbent, in attempting to take credit or lay claim over the success they achieved.
Ikrar Nusa Bhakti, senior research fellow at the Indonesian Science Institute (LIPI), thus stated Monday (15/6). Ikrar delivered the statement in response to acts of claiming achievements and successes by the candidates, the issues ranges from such issues as the construction of the Surabaya-Madura (Suramadu) bridge to the peace settlement efforts which led to the Momerandum of Understanding (MOU) between Indonesia and the Free Aceh Movement (GAM) in Helsinki.
In his opinion, as long as they actually executed or were involved in the making of the policy, however small a contribution it may be, it’s not forbidden to take credit for it. What should not be done is taint these claims with lies. In which case, the presidential-vice presidential candidates take credit for something that they did not actually do.
“It is actually fortunate that there are these acts of taking credit over their successes since the public will consequently be informed clearly on how an actual policy is in the making. It will shed light on the working performance and system of the government in policy-making. This will in fact help to open the eyes of the public,” Ikrar stipulated.
