Translation - English The Thyroid
Description
The thyroid gland is a single gland located in the middle part of the neck, supported specifically by the duct that goes from the larynx to the trachea. Its volume varies significantly depending on the individual, age and sex. Its weight in an adult is 25 to 30 grams. It has two sections, or lobes, joined by an isthmus. In an adult, each lobe measures about 5 cm long by 3 cm wide.
Thyroid hormones
The thyroid produces two fundamental hormones, thyroxin (T4) and triiodothyronin (T3), which have similar functions. Triiodothyronin, in lower concentration in the blood than thyroxin, comes from a transformation of the latter.
§ Secondly, thyroid hormones increase the number and activity of the cell mitochondria. Mitochondrias are cellular organs that produce "fuel" (ATP) that other components of the cell need to carry out various metabolic processes.
Control of thyroid activity
Under normal conditions, the two main thyroid hormones maintain bodily activities at their appropriate levels via a system of "feedback" controlled by the pituitary gland. The pituitary gland secretes a hormone called TSH that induces the thyroid to produce thyroid hormones. These, in turn, control the production of TSH by the pituitary gland depending on whether the levels circulating in the blood are higher or lower. Any alteration in this system causes the thyroid hormone levels to vary.

Hypothyroidism
Hypothyroidism is the medical profile that is caused when there is a thyroid hormone deficiency. The T4 hormone or thyroxin is low and, as a result the pituitary TSH is raised in order to stimulate the production of the thyroid.
Since the hormones that the thyroid produces influence the metabolism of all organs and systems, their decline will affect the entire body, though in a very different way depending on the age of the affected patient, be it child or adult.
In adults, there is an initial stage of non-specific symptoms such as fatigue, muscular weakness, intolerance to cold, and dry flaky skin and drowsiness, in which it is difficult to detect the disorder or it is attributed to other reasons (depression, aging, etc.). As the hormone levels drop, myxedema and other changes appear in the entire body.
