April 24, 2009 marks the 60th anniversary of the liberation of Taiyuan. Sixty years ago today, following the order of the Military Commission of the CPC Central Committee and Chairman Mao, the Chinese People’s Liberation Army launched an overall attack on the last stronghold held by the Nationalist reactionaries in north China and liberated Taiyuan, thus toppling the 38-year-old hideous rule of Yan Xishan. From then on, the ancient city of Taiyuan, back into the hands of the people, has got a new lease of life.
The Battle for the Liberation of Taiyuan started on October 5, 1948 and ended on April 24, 1949. During the entire course of the battle, the Taiyuan Frontier Committee of the Communist Party of China headed by Xu Xiangqian, the commander in chief, carrying out the campaign plan—“besiege, disintegrate, attack”, had directed the battle in a flexible and decisive manner; wave upon wave of PLA officers and men, in face of the seemingly impregnable fortifications of the enemy, fought fearlessly, accomplishing an immortal deed for the liberation of Taiyuan; the underground workers collected military information and motivated the enemy forces to stage uprisings; and the broad masses of people provided backup support by bearing stretchers and transporting provisions and ammunition, making an indelible contribution to the liberation of Taiyuan.
Eternal glory to the commanders and soldiers of the Chinese People’s Liberation Army and the broad masses of people who fought bravely and heroically in the Battle for the Liberation of Taiyuan.
