| Translation - English The change of the social position held by women led to a upsurge of female singing in the middle of the 18th century. For a long time women had been barred from exercising important musical functions, an example of which was the liturgical singing in church. The convents in which a musical culture of high standing had already developed in the Middle Ages were the exceptions. The Venetian boarding schools for girls, in which the emphasis lay on the musical education of the girls, also played a special role in the history of the female choral tradition. The female choirs of these institutions consisted of four parts with the low voices singing the tenor part, thereby giving the impression of a bass. |
