Dutch to English: Het objectieve karakter van het schone
General field: Art/Literary
Detailed field: Art, Arts & Crafts, Painting

According to modern principles, an artwork must be judged by its beauty. That beauty lies in the manner in which the artist expresses his personal, subjective feelings. A medieval artist, on the contrary, was not bent on expressing his own subjectivity and did not attempt to create beauty. He was not able to do that, as beauty was an objective category which was unique in all that existed and which existed outside of the artist himself.
Thomas Aquinas puts it succinctly: ‘Non enim ideo aliquid est pulchrum et quia nos illud amamus, sed quia est pulchrum et bonum, ideo amatur a nobis.’ (‘Therefore a thing is not beautiful because we love it; it is beloved because it is beautiful and good.’)
Thus, for Thomas Aquinas, beauty is a quality of things, not a qualification which people can give to things at will.
Also an artwork is beautiful. The beauty of it expresses itself in its shape. The shape in itself is not beautiful by another aspect apart from it, but by an organic symbiosis of all aspects of shape, matter, working technique, function and meaning. An artist makes a beautiful object if he creates a shape by his own working technique which, on one hand respects the qualities of the chosen matter optimally and on the other is highly suited to its function and to beholding its present moral and anagogic meaning.

This view is largely endorsed by modern historians. No one doubts the scale of the calamity. Nor is it in question that successive British administrations were incompetent, even callous. Given the nature of Ireland In 1845 however, the actual physical, social and political situation, it is hard to see how the Famine could have been averted. The modern reader is aghast at the unfolding narratives of suffering which any account of the Famine will provide. But in the circumstances and at the time, it is hard to see what a different government, even a government based in Dublin, could have done. True, good landlords (of whom there were all too few) could alleviate suffering in some measure on their estates. True, the continued trade in corn, when the famine was at it height, was avoidable, causes anguish to read about today, and caused worse than anguish to the starving who watched Irish corn being exported from Cork and elsewhere. But given the social hierarchies which existed at the time, and the political tensions which already overshadowed Anglo-Irish relations, one knows that it is as unrealistic to have expected a modern-style famine relief operation as it is to have expected Lord John Russell’s government to take maize to County Kerry by helicopter. A modern historian, K. Theodore Hoppen, says, ‘Although the government’s response was extremely inefficient, grudging and limited, perhaps only an authoritarian state committed to the welfare of the poor at all costs could have achieved a great deal more.

A property equals your own house? In the cities especially, the correctness of this seemingly natural equation has been gradually decreasing year after year. Where the land on offer still allows it, most people interested in acquiring property are still able to make their wish come true in the shape of a detached or semi-detached house. However, in the core areas of the housing market, that is to say the urban centres of northern, western and southern Germany, co-ownership has frequently become an alternative – often due to the renovation of former rental homes. Already in a whole series of main cities co-owners live at least as regularly in apartment blocks as in detached or semi-detached homes. At the front comes Munich with 60% of properties ‘off the ground’, but also in Stuttgart or Hannover the proportion of co-owned freehold properties is in excess of 50%.
