Translation - English Up to the 1990s, shale gas production picked up pace in the U.S., driven by such factors as favorable policies, prices and technological advancements. The adoption of horizontal well drilling technology in 2003 pushed up shale gas output to 20 billion cubic meters that year. And the number of oil companies engaged in shale gas development in the U.S. grew from 23 in 2005 to over 60 in 2008.
In 2008, the number of shale gas wells in the U.S. surpassed 40,000, which altogether produced 52 billion cubic meters of natural gas, accounting for 10% of the U.S. national total (EIA, 2009); The number of shale gas wells further increased to 98,590, yielding more than 87.8 billion cubic meters the following year, of which Barnett Shale contributed 50 billion cubic meters. The dazzling shale gas development pushed up America’s natural gas reserve by 40%. And shale gas production capacity in the country is projected to reach 206.6 billion cubic meters by 2020 (Kuuskraa, 2009).
