Source text - French C’est un petit appartement blotti sous les combles et bourré de tout un fatras de plaques publicitaires hors d’âge, cendriers et vieilles boîtes en fer blanc, entassés de façon si hétéroclite qu’on peine à y distinguer, alignés sur une poutre, les trophées les plus glorieux du cinéma européen, Lion de Venise, Ours de Berlin, plus quatre César eux-mêmes égarés au milieu des représentations les plus diverses de félins. Chats dessinés, chats photographiés, miniatures sculptées de chats, enfin un gros matou noir, bien vivant celui-là, bien poilu et griffu, et chargé de remplacer dans le cœur d’Annie Girardot son malheureux congénère Hitchcock, trépassé de vieillesse après des années passées à idolâtrer sa maîtresse.
«C’est un amour fou, celui que donnent ces bêtes», sourit gentiment l’actrice au fond du fauteuil où elle vient de réfugier sa frêle et troublante présence-absence. Présence, car dès qu’elle parle de sa passion pour la gent féline, son regard s’anime, pétille, vous inonde d’une joie quasi enfantine. «Maintenant, c’est comme ça: j’ai des chats, à la place des amants! Parce que c’est rassurant, un chat, ça vous a à l’œil, tout le temps, ça vous protège. Le précédent s’appelait Hitchcock. Un nom formidable, non? Cela a été très dur de le quitter. On l’a remplacé tout de suite, on m’a trouvé Gonzo. Lui, Gonzo, c’est l’énergie, la force. Rien qu’à le voir bouger, je me sens forte. . . »
Translation - English We are in a small apartment nestled in the rafters and stuffed full of knickknacks including timeless advertising hoardings, ash trays and old tins, piled so haphazardly it is hard to pick them out. There you will also find, lined up on the exposed beams, the most prestigious trophies of European cinema: a Venetian Lion award, a Berlin Bear award, plus four Césars, themselves lost amongst various portrayals of felines. Sketched cats, photographed cats, miniature sculptures of cats, and finally a big black tom who, with his thick fur and sharp claws, is definitely alive. He has been given the job of replacing his predecessor Hitchcock in Annie Girardot’s heart, as the latter died of old age after many years spent worshipping his mistress.
“These animals give you unconditional love,” smiles the actress from the depths of her armchair where she has just sought refuge from her fragile and perturbing present/absent presence. Present, because as soon as she speaks of her passion for cats, her eyes light up, become animated, and swamp you with an almost childlike joy. “Now it’s like this: I have cats instead of lovers! Because cats are reassuring, they always keep an eye on you, they protect you. The last one was called Hitchcock. Good name ay? It was hard to let him go. We replaced him straight away, they found Gonzo for me. Gonzo’s all energy and strength. Just seeing him move makes me feel strong...”
