Translation - English The Mihrab or "niche" is a special geometric configuration found in one of the corners of the mosque. It is used to determine the direction of Qibla (the direction of the Kaaba in Mecca city that Muslims turn to during prayer). Engineers have excelled in the design of the Mihrab owing to its religious importance. Muslims used different materials for making the Mihrab including wood inlaid with ivory and different kinds of stones like colored marble. The early Mihrab was a cavity in the wall in a semi-circular shape. Muslims used various forms of ornaments to decorate the Mihrab such as geometric and plant arabesque designs, as well as Koranic verses written in various calligraphies. Al Muqarnasat was also used in beautifying the Mihrab. They are geometric shapes of different lengths that hang from the wall and are inspired by the stalactites and cranes found in caves.
