English to Chinese: Nortse‧Tsering Nyandak: Fragile Mandala. General field: Art/Literary Detailed field: Art, Arts & Crafts, Painting
Source text - English Mandalas are familiar to many people as colorful “new age” circular shaped artworks occurring in both spiritual and secular encounters. The concept of the mandala is ancient. On the spiritual side they are psychologically powerful architectural constructions that are employed in Buddhist teaching, building and meditation practice. Tibetans characterize certain holy places such as the revered Mt. Kailas as natural mandalas and make their circumambulations and devotions at such power places as they would when mentally traveling through a painted meditative mandala. In recent years many people around the world have attended events where Tibetan monks create mandalas made of intricately applied colored sand particles. Audiences exposed to these creations are quite surprised and then refreshed when at the completion of the monk’s extended efforts and after the prescribed prayers have been offered, the same monks sweep up the sand; destroying the mandala, thereby emphasizing the impermanence and fragility of the human condition. Mandalas can be said to have become representative of and a symbol of ancient Tibetan culture.

Translation - English The production of “paper money for the underworld” and posters of door guardians originate from the art of print making. The huapai (decorative panels) used in celebratory ceremonies by ritual communities are examples of folk painting. Motifs painted on lacquer screens are indebted to common subject matter of traditional Chinese paintings of landscapes, figures, mansions and pavilions, as well as folklores. The 12 Chinese zodiac signs and paper-cutting folk art are widely used and reinterpreted by present-day designers in graphic and product designs for festive occasions. Artisans making dough figurines on the streets are promoters of miniature sculpture. The craft of making ritual paper paraphernalia, if combined with papier mâché and other contemporary art forms, can nourish installation art with myriad possibilities. If the mastery of making Ming-style furniture can be inherited by young sculptors today, given the right chances and opportunities, new talents in wood sculpting will merge.
