Rappelons que la fièvre aphteuse est une maladie virale, très contagieuse, qui affecte les bovins, les porcs, les moutons, les chèvres, les cerfs et d’autres ruminants à onglons. Pour certaines espèces, bovine et porcine en particulier, la maladie est extrêmement sérieuse, causant de graves dommages à l’animal infecté. Elle se caractérise par une fièvre et des lésions vésiculeuses (aphtes ou ulcères) sur la langue et les lèvres, dans la bouche, sur les mamelles et entre les onglons. Il n’existe aucun traitement et la vaccination est interdite au Canada. La contamination du bétail canadien serait de plus fort nuisible pour l’économie du pays, en raison des contraintes au commerce liées à cette maladie.
Bien que les humains ne puissent contracter la fièvre aphteuse, ils peuvent être porteurs du virus. Celui-ci peut être transmis par un contact direct ou étroit avec des animaux infectés ou par un contact avec des lieux où le virus est présent. Le virus peut être transporté par les humains sur leurs vêtements, leurs chaussures et sur leur peau, où il peut survivre jusqu’à 14 jours. Il peut se transmettre directement ou indirectement au bétail en santé, lors d’un contact étroit avec l’animal ou les bâtiments d’élevage. André Vallières, de l’ACIA, mentionne que des risques de transmission par les voies respiratoires seraient de plus possibles. Hoof and mouth disease is a highly contagious viral disease of cattle, pigs, sheep, goats, deer and other cloven-hoofed ruminants. It is very serious in certain species, especially cattle and pigs, causing considerable damage to infected animals. Characteristic symptoms are fever, and vesicular lesions (ulcers) on tongue and lips, in the mouth, and on teats and hoofs. There is no treatment, and the vaccine against hoof and mouth disease is banned in Canada. An outbreak in Canadian livestock would be extremely damaging to the country’s economy because of trade restrictions associated with this disease.
Although humans cannot contract hoof and mouth disease, they can be a carrier. It can be picked up by being in direct or close contact with infected animals or by being in an area where the virus is present. The virus can be carried on clothing, shoes or on the skin, where it can survive up to 14 days. It can be transmitted directly or indirectly to healthy livestock by close contact with the animal or its housing. André Vallières, of the CFIA, says that transmission by inhalation is possible, although only over a period of 72 hours at the most.

Analyse du comptage bactérien – nouveau mode de prélèvement de l’échantillon
Tel qu’expliqué dans la revue Le producteur de lait québécois du mois d’avril 2007, le Ministère de l’Agriculture, des Pêcheries et de l’Alimentation du Québec (MAPAQ) utilisera dorénavant une nouvelle méthode d’analyse des bactéries présentes dans le lait cru.
Le laboratoire d’expertise du MAPAQ sera équipé d’un Bactoscan FC qui permet d’obtenir le résultat du comptage bactérien en 10 minutes plutôt que les 48 heures requises par l’actuelle méthode d’analyse sur Petrifoss. Les analyses faites sur les échantillons tests ont démontré, à 95%, des résultats comparables d’une méthode à l’autre (Petrifoss vs Bactoscan).
Le Bactoscan compte chacune des bactéries présentes dans le lait plutôt que de compter les colonies de bactéries. Le résultat d’analyse sera donc plus élevé.
Toutefois, la norme réglementaire appliquée par le MAPAQ, actuellement fixée à 100 000 UFC / ml de lait et la norme administrative appliquée par la Fédération des producteurs de lait du Québec (FPLQ) qui est de 50 000 UFC / ml seront adaptées en conséquence afin de tenir compte du comptage individuel des bactéries présentes dans le lait par le Bactoscan.
Cette nouvelle méthode d’analyse, en plus de modifier l’échelle des résultats à la ferme, entraîne aussi un changement dans le mode de prélèvement des échantillons par les experts-essayeurs. En effet, l’analyse à l’aide du Bactoscan nécessite une quantité plus importante de lait et un contenant de plus grand format que le « vacutainer » utilisé présentement.
Les experts-essayeurs de la région ont reçu, les 16, 17 et 18 avril derniers, une formation afin de prendre connaissance de la nouvelle méthode de prélèvement.
La méthode…
L’échantillon de lait sera prélevé à l’aide d’une bouteille de plastique pareille à celle utilisée pour l’échantillon servant à l’analyse des composants. La bouteille sera cependant de couleur bleue et elle sera ensachée dans un sac de plastique. La bouteille sera plongée dans le lait à l’aide d’une tige en acier inoxydable qui devra être lavée au savon, rincée à l’eau chaude et asséchée avant de procéder à l’échantillonnage.
Pour que tout fonctionne correctement, cela implique :

À la base, une bonne hygiène des équipements de traite et de refroidissement du lait (lactoduc, bassin refroidisseur, manchons trayeurs etc.) et de l’environnement (laiterie).
Un refroidissement adéquat du lait
Notez bien que la température du lait ne doit jamais excéder 10 C durant la traite et la température doit être ramenée le plus rapidement possible entre 0 C et 4 C dans un délai maximal de 60 minutes après la fin de la traite.

Ces trois éléments sont essentiels pour la désinfection des mains et de la tige en acier inoxydable !!! Il revient donc à chaque producteur d’y voir… c’est d’ailleurs déjà obligatoire selon le Règlement sur la salubrité des produits laitiers.

Agitation du lait durant 5 minutes avant le prélèvement de l’échantillon
5 minutes… c’est amplement suffisant pour se laver les mains, désinfecter et assécher la tige en acier inoxydable !
Se laver les mains avec de l’eau savonneuse
Laver la tige en acier inoxydable avec de l’eau savonneuse
Rincer la tige à l’eau chaude afin d’enlever toute trace de savon
Essuyer la tige avec un papier à usage unique et déposer la tige sur un NOUVEAU papier sec et propre
Truc pratique !!! Plutôt que de déposer la tige sur un papier sec et propre après l’avoir lavée, certains essayeurs ont proposé que le producteur installe, à proximité du bassin refroidisseur, un crochet qui permettrait de suspendre la tige propre et sèche, le temps de procéder aux autres étapes du prélèvement.
Briser le scellé de la bouteille alors que la bouteille est toujours ensachée dans le plastique
Ouvrir le sachet
Tout en laissant la bouteille dans l’emballage, identifier la bouteille à l’aide du numéro de producteur (collant avec code à barres)
Introduire la charnière du couvercle dans la tige en acier inoxydable
Une fois la bouteille soutenue par la tige, retirer le sachet de plastique
Procéder au prélèvement en plongeant la bouteille (ouverture vers le bas) sous le lait et remonter la bouteille en faisant un arc de cercle
Vider l’excès de lait jusqu’au trait de 50 ml (soit dans le bassin ou dans l’évier)
Fermer le couvercle de la bouteille en prenant soin de bien apposer le scellé
Rincer le contenant de la bouteille à l’eau froide
Placer la bouteille immédiatement dans l’eau et la glace jusqu’à l’usine

Bacterial Count Analysis – New Sampling Method
As explained in the April 2007 issue of the journal, Le producteur de lait québécois, the Ministère de l’Agriculture, des Pêcheries et de l’Alimentation du Québec (MAPAQ) has a new method of analyzing bacteria in raw milk.
MAPAQ’s milk testing laboratory will be equipped with a Bactoscan FC, reducing the time needed for bacterial counts from 48 hours, with the current Petrifoss apparatus, to 10 minutes. Analyses performed on test samples using both methods gave comparable results (at a 95% confidence level).
The Bactoscan counts individual bacteria in the milk rather than bacterial colonies, so the count numbers will be higher.
However, the legal standard of 100,000 UFC/ml of milk applied by MAPAQ and the internal standard of the Fédération des producteurs de lait du Québec (FPLQ) of
50,000 UFC/ml will be adjusted to take into account the change in counting technique by the Batoscan method.
With this new technology, not only will the scale of the results change but also the method by which the licensed sampler will draw samples. The Bactocan requires a larger milk sample and a bigger container than the current “vacutainer.”
On April 16, 17, and 18, the region’s licensed samplers attended a training session to become acquainted with the new method.
The method….
The milk sample will be collected in a plastic bottle similar to that used for collecting milk constituent analysis samples. However, in this case the bottle is blue and is inserted in a plastic bag. The bottle is immersed in the milk using a stainless steel rod, which must be washed with soap, rinsed in hot water and dried before sampling.
To ensure that the procedure goes well:
The producer must provide:
• The fundamental requirement of good hygiene of milking and milk refrigeration equipment (pipeline, bulk tank, teat cups, etc.) and the surrounding environment (milking parlour).
• Adequate cooling of the milk.
Note: The temperature of the milk should never be above 10° C during milking and it should be brought down to between 0° C and 4° C as quickly as possible, within no longer than an hour after the end of milking.
• A sink with hot and cold running water in the milk house
• A soap dispenser
• A single-service towel dispenser
These latter three elements are essential for disinfecting the hands and the stainless steel rod! Each producer must ensure that this equipment is available. It is already required by the
Règlement sur la salubrité des produits laitiers.
• A garbage pail with cover for disposing of materials used during sampling
The licensed sampler must:
• Mix the milk for 5 minutes before sampling.
5 minutes… just long enough to go wash his/her hands, and disinfect and dry the stainless steel rod!
• Wash his/her hands with soapy water.
• Wash the steel rod with soapy water.
• Rinse the rod with hot water to eliminate all traces of soap.
• Wipe the rod with a single-service paper towel and place the rod on ANOTHER clean, dry paper towel.
A practical hint: Rather than placing the rod on a clean, dry paper towel after washing, some samplers have suggested that producers install a hook near the bulk tank where the clean, dry rod can be hung until needed for the sampling procedure.
• Break the seal on the bottle while the bottle is still in the plastic bag.
• Open the bag.
• While it is still in the bag, identify the bottle with the producer’s number (sticker with bar code).
• Insert the hinge of the bottle cap into the stainless steel rod.
• Once the bottle is attached to the rod, take off the plastic bag.
• Draw the sample by immersing the bottle (open end down) into the milk and bringing it up in an arc
• Pour off the excess milk into the tank or the sink, bringing the level of milk in the bottle down to the 50 ml mark
• Close the bottle’s cap, and carefully re-seal it.
• Rinse the outside of the bottle in cold water
• Immediately place the bottle in ice water and keep it submerged until it reaches the plant.

Source text - French L’échantillonnage en mer de Beaufort a eut lieu à l’été 2004 lors du Leg 8 de la mission CASES (Canadian Arctic Shelf Exchange Study). Les 3 séquences sédimentaires ont été prélevées à l’aide de tubes de pvc enfoncés dans la benne du carottier à boîte. La carotte 2004-804-912A (latitude 69°.29.25N, longitude 137°.56.43W, profondeur 54m, longueur 39cm) se trouve le plus près de la côte, la carotte 2004-804-909B (latitude 69°.45.16N, longitude 138°.16.296W, profondeur 169m, longueur 36cm) est en position intermédiaire et la carotte 2004-804-906B (latitude 70°.01.145N, longitude 138°.35.817W, profondeur 272m, longueur 34cm) est la plus au large (Fig. 1). Par la suite les 3 carottes ont été décrites et échantillonnées en continu selon un intervalle de 1 cm au Bedford Institut of Oceanography à Dartmouth en Nouvelle-Écosse. Les analyses palynologiques ont été réalisées selon un intervalle de 2 cm. Cependant, l’échantillonnage pour le comptage de Halodinium sp. a été pratiqué au centimètre, pour les huit premiers centimètres de la carotte 906B. Chaque échantillon est ensuite traité selon la méthode palynologique standard décrite par Rochon et al. (1999). Pour les reconstitutions on utilise les kystes de dinoflagellés (=dinokystes) comme indicateurs des conditions paléocéanographiques (températures et salinités de surface pour l’été et l’hiver, durée du couvert de glace). Les dinokystes sont très utiles particulièrement dans les environnements marins des hautes latitudes. En effet, la membrane des kystes est composée d’un polymère hautement résistant, la dinosporine, qui leur permet une bonne préservation dans les sédiments affectés par la dissolution, contrairement aux microfossiles siliceux (e.g. diatomées) ou carbonatés (e.g. coccolithes) (de Vernal et al., 2001).

Dinocysts are very useful, particularly in high latitude marine environments. The cyst’s membrane is composed of a highly resistant polymer, dinosporin, which enables it to persist in sediments that dissolve siliceous (e.g. diatoms) and carbonate microfossils (e.g. coccoliths) (de Vernal et al., 2001).

Le document révèle qu’environ 80 % de ces individus sont des femmes ou des filles. La majorité d’entre elles seraient exploitées sexuellement. S’ajoutent à ces victimes les milliers de personnes trafiquées à l’intérieur des frontières d’un État. Selon l’OIT, le nombre minimal de personnes victimes de travail forcé lié à la traite, interne et externe, est d’environ 2,45 millions . Il s’agit de la forme de crime organisé qui a connu la croissance la plus rapide ces dernières années.
L’Amérique latine et les Caraïbes forment une importante région d’origine pour les victimes de la traite transnationale. Plusieurs d’entre elles proviennent du Brésil, de la Colombie, du Guatemala, du Mexique et de la République dominicaine . On estime qu’environ 50 000 Dominicaines et 70 000 Brésiliennes sont engagées actuellement dans la prostitution internationale et que bon nombre d’entre elles sont victimes de la traite . Un nombre considérable d’enfants d’origine brésilienne seraient également trafiqués et exploités sexuellement. Translation - English 3. The state of human trafficking worldwide and in the Americas.
In a recent report by the US Department of State, the number of victims of transnational human trafficking each year is estimated at between 600,000 and 800,000 . This document reveals that about 80% of them are women or girls and the majority of them are sexually exploited. There are also thousands of victims of trafficking within national borders. According to the ILO, the minimum number of victims of forced labor associated with internal or external trafficking is about 2.45 million . This is a form of organized crime whose growth has accelerated in recent years.
Many of the victims of human trafficking come from Latin America and the Caribbean, notably Brazil, Colombia, Guatemala, Mexico and the Dominican Republic . It is estimated that about 50,000 Dominican women and 70,000 Brazilian women are engaged in international prostitution at this time and that a good number of them are victims of human trafficking . A large number of Brazilian children are subject to trafficking and sexual exploitation. Most of the victims are exported to North America (the United States, Canada), Western Europe (Spain, Germany, Italy, Great Britain, the Netherlands, Belgium) and Japan. Many Latin American and Caribbean countries are also transit areas for victims of human trafficking coming from Asian countries and heading for the United States.

Before becoming a professional translator, I worked for 25 years in agriculture, environmental protection, entomology, crop protection, and integrated pest management. I did field and laboratory research, as well as extension work with producers, and managed IPM programs in conservatories.
My maternal language is English but I was born and raised in the French-speaking province of Quebec. I started learning French at the age of seven and have lived and worked in both languages, in Quebec and France, for the past 20 years.
