Exile Tribes
Exiles represent First Nations tribes not represented in the scenario by a playable civilization. These tribes abound throughout the unsettled lands. There are two types of barbarian tribes: Passive and Aggressive.
Hurrying Production
Under other forms of government you can pay overtime and hire temporary workers to complete a project. This costs gold from your treasury; the amount depends upon how much work remains to be done.
Beavers
When the wide-brimmed felt hat came into fashion later in the 16th century, the demand for beaver pelts increased tremendously. The best material for hat felt was the soft underfur of the beaver, the strands of which had tiny barbs that made them mat together tightly.
Mohawk Bear Warrior
In the early journals of the Dutch, the Kenienké: haka, or People of the Flint known as Mohawks, were referred to as the bears by their Algonquin adversaries the Mahican. In fact the name Mohawk is derived from the Algonquin word Mohawkwa (bear).
Other terms for bear were Maquasé or Maqua. In fact Kenienké: haka culture had three clans, wolf, turtle and bear. It appears the bear had precedence during times of war.
The Mohawks traditional territory ranged from west of Cohoes Falls to Woods Creek in the west to Kaniatariawhané (Great River) St. Lawrence in the north to as far as Pennsylvania in the south. The Kenienkè: haka were the eastern doorkeepers of the Haudenosaunè confederacy.
Iroquois Bone Carriers
(They Carry the Bones)
The first elite Haudenosaunè fighting unit.
Rotiskenra:kètewhich means the Bone Carriers. Although the word has been sometimes translated as ‘warrior’, it is derived from a time long ago when the men would carry the bones of their ancestors to an ossuary before moving their villages.
It was believed that since the bones remained after decomposition they still retained power within them. The men would sing a song called the hai hai as they carried the bones.
The Haudenosaune stopped the practice of carrying the bones long ago but retained the memory and song when installing new leaders. Like the bones of the ancestors the names of the leaders would be passed on and never decompose or become lost. The bone carriers are men who defend the retention of the traditions.
Pine Tree Chief
Sometime after the formation of the Haudenosaune confederacy, it was decided to create a special leadership role for those who had distinguished themselves in the society. This could apply during times of war. The Pine Tree Chief (Wakahnetó:ten) filled such a role.
They were like a second voice of chiefs during the confederacy councils. Joseph Brant Theyendinaga (Two sticks Tied together) and Skenendor (Deer) were two notable Pine Tree chiefs during the American Revolutionary War.
The Pine Tree Chiefs were part of the process of extending the rafters of the Kaieneré: kowa (Great Law of Peace) which allowed for new resolutions to be put forward when needed.
Wabash Braveheart
The Anishnabé term Okitchida means Bravehearted one.
The term applies to the bravest of the men whose role is to defend their society from attack or if needed take the offensive to the enemy.
The Wabash originally consisted of the Potawatomie, Odawa and Ojibwa along with those affiliated with them. They were sometimes known as the Three Fires confederacy. Their territory extended from North of Lake Ontario, South West and North of Lake Erie, and around Lake Michigan as far as Lake Superior.
Algonquin Wolf Warrior
There were various Algonquin societies that referred to themselves as wolves most notably the Mahican and Mohican which translate as wolf. They inhabited the areas from the east of Cohoes Falls New York into Vermont and even Connecticut.
Long Knife (A military Unit)
Wearers of the Wampum Necklace
White adoptees into Aboriginal societies were given a necklace of wampum to wear signifying that they were now integrated into the society. This was after showing bravery by running a gauntlet of women and children hitting them with sticks until they reached the safety of a post on the other side.
Once there it was decided whether they would be adopted or killed. If adopted they would have their hair combed by the oldest women of the clan they were adopted into and then had a necklace of wampum put over them. This would ensure their safety in the village.
(Asseronè - Knife Makers) The common term for white people was asseronè knife or axe makers. This term was used because metal knives and axes became valuable items in trade. Eventually metal tomahawks became a staple in trade. Often these metal tomahawks would have an axe on one side and a peace pipe on the other. A symbol that has been adopted in the game to represent the Wabash confederacy.
Native Mercenary
Aboriginal people fought on both sides during the wars between the French and British and later the two wars between the British and Americans. Often it was due to old animosities between two Aboriginal societies.
Up to the War of 1812 they fought in their own units. As they became less powerful they would join the side that appeared to be most powerful and the greatest threat to them. By the end of the War of 1812 they were being conscripted into the regular forces of the British or Americans.
Native Musket
The adoption of the musket by the Haudenosaune changed the balance of power in their favour. In 1609 they were attacked at Lake Champlain, by Samuel De Champlain armed with the prototype of a musket and a coalition of Algonquin fighters and Huron observers.
The Haudenosaune immediately began to trade for the musket with the Dutch. Unfortunately for the Huron’s and Algonquin’s the French Jesuits would only trade muskets to a minority who became Catholic. This gave the Haudenosaune the advantage.
As the musket evolved from its early prototype it became a staple of Aboriginal fighters over the bow and arrow. However, they still needed powder and a blacksmith for repairs leaving them dependent on the colonial forces.
Shawnee Panther Warrior
Tecumseh of the Shawnee was one of the greatest leaders of the Algonquin tribes, who tried to confederate all of the Aboriginal peoples into a pan-tribal confederacy.
Tecumthá means Panther in the Sky or It Crosses the Way.
A shooting star or Panther in the Sky during birth was a sign that someone was going to do great things on behalf of their people. It was also an important clan symbol.
The Shawnees ranged throughout Kentucky, Ohio and later Indiana.
Great Canal
The Erie Canal, first proposed in 1699 became a reality in 1798 with the formation of the Niagara Canal Company and preparations for its construction. The canal was completed in 1825 and linked the port of New York City (via the Hudson river) with the great lakes and the western interior.
It sparked a massive population increase and economic boom in western New York state and cut transport costs by as much as 90 percent.
The Welland canal was opened in 1829 and sparked the growth of the city of Montreal as a major commercial centre. The Welland Canal provided a competitive route to the Erie Canal by connecting Lake Erie to Lake Ontario and the St Lawrence River.
The Rideau Canal was a military undertaking that connected Montreal to Kingston via Ottawa. Completed in 1832, it allowed British supply ships and communications to avoid the St Lawrence River, which borders the United States.
Boston Tea Party
The Boston Tea Party is a pre-placed wonder will help the American nation reduce its corruption and provide a large happiness and culture bonus.
As each nation grows, citizens will become more and more unruly, and will require closer monitoring and care. Wonders such as this will help in that control.
Several British parliamentary acts were extremely unpopular in the American colonies and gave rise to popular dissent that eventually led to the American Revolution.
An early protest against the British taxation laws was an organized boycott of Chinese tea imported by the British East India Company.
Eventually the ships carrying tea were prevented from landing as most American ports turned the tea away. In Boston, however, the East India Company had the help of the British-appointed governor - plans were made to bring in - by force - the tea under the protection given by British armed ships.
On December 16, 1773, the night before the tea was supposed to be landed, the Sons of Liberty, a group of about 60 local Boston residents organized by Samuel Adams, boarded the ships Dartmouth, the Eleanor and the Beaver, which were loaded with hundreds of crates of tea. They began destroying the cargo and by 9:00 PM they had smashed 342 crates of tea in all three ships and had thrown them overboard. They took off their shoes, swept the decks, and made each ship's first mate agree to say that the Sons of Liberty had destroyed only the tea. The whole event was remarkably quiet and peaceful.
The British government responded harshly by closing the port of Boston and the ensuing political crisis led to the American Revolution

Long Couteau
