Source text - English SUMMARY
During the kraft pulping process, the resins existing in the wood form agglomerates of organic compounds known as pitch. Among the resin constituents one can find fatty acids, esters, unsaponifiable and others which, depending on the concentration and the process conditions, enable formation of deposits. There are also inorganic substances, mainly metallic cations which appear in the process and lead to form complexes precipitating together with the pitch. The problems derivating from the pitch in the kraft process are increased when processing hard woods like eucalyptus since this type of wood have a higher amount of unsaponifiable compounds which are not dissolved in black liquor during the cooking process.
Arauco mill, from 1998, started the eucalyptus pulp production in Line 1 showing problems with the pitch which were reflected in the level of dots in the final product. Due to this, studies were carried out in eucalyptus production line in 2005, 2008 and 2009 where tests involving pitch analysis, dot classification, metals and extractable determination were performed and they were compared to the historical data from the process.
In line 1, the history of dots level shows they increase in winter and spring, at the same time, in this period the industrial water clarifying agent consumption increases. The analysis of pitch deposits found in the bleaching area, revealed a high content of aluminium, iron and silica. With the purpose of decreasing the presence of iron deposits in the process, it was chosen to change the water feeding sewer by one made of stainless steel.
In 2008, an increase in the pitch agglomeration was detected in bleaching and pulp dryer areas which resulted in changes of talc and dispersant dosing points.
Finally, with the changes made in the process, it was possible to decrease average dots (from 1.55 to 0.8 mm2/kg) in the final product with the stabilization of the pitch in the process (0.22 mm2/kg).
