I have been working for years in the medical field and for various NGOs. After spending a number of years in Germany I recently decided to start a translation course with the aim of specialising in medical texts and reports, especially related to children and developing countries.
I am not currently looking for work in this area, but ProZ.com was recommended to me as a good place to learn more about the whole process of translating.
