It had been years since I’d seen such a sunset.
At six in the evening it was still light and the sun’s reflections played upon the water, creating a truly magical atmosphere, almost as if the ocean were turning to flames.
Although my 2 mm spring suit kept me fairly warm, I could tell by the thread of fresh water that made its way inside that the season was changing, and soon enough the most intense disturbances from the north would drastically alter these summertime temperatures.
For the entire day the waves had been terrible, thanks to the strong Greek wind that had blown so intensely as to keep the ocean roiling and white capped.
Only near five o’clock did it die down, transforming the swells into perfect liquid curtains, amazing for their length and consistency.
There were only two of us in the lineup waiting our turn to take a ride on that wild carousel given to us by Mother Nature.
Finally I was calm, of a serenity inside that you feel only when you are truly at peace with yourself and the world; nothing can upset your equilibrium and you can deal with anything decisively but still with a smile on your face.
Of all the ugly thoughts that had populated my mind in the past, nothing remained but distant memories; I was a new man, rather, I was once again becoming myself.
While I waited, reflecting on my longboard, right in front of me Filippo was flashing by on his shortboard, slashing and surfing each wave to the end, almost to just a few feet from the shore.
Not even the smallest backwash escaped him as he greedily paddled into waves with every last bit of strength left to him after the long day in the water, and, giving himself an extra push with a kick of his feet, he succeeded in catching every wave.
In the distance, I watched the little fishing boats disappear and reappear on the horizon, mirroring the consistent arrival of sets.
Every time I turned the nose of my board towards shore, ready to take off, I felt the same emotions; I would begin to paddle, and the adrenaline rushing through my body would make me feel as if I were living everything that was happening in slow motion.
I felt the ocean rise under my board, lifting me up to the highest point on the wave, the moment in which the drop began.
I rode in fluid longboard style, descending and rising towards the peak in a succession of soft turns until I found myself suddenly underwater, at the point where I could touch with my feet and the water came up only to my waist.
As I retrieved my board, I realized that stamped on my face was the classic smile of the child opening gifts on Christmas day.
Filippo had been watching me all along, as if he had been observing a UFO passing over his head…
