Source text - Italian The close analysis that follows will propose that one of the most successful instances, in literary terms, of the fictional embracing of the Malvinas/Falklands conflict is Tre cavalli. Thematically, it could be said that the Argentina of the first-person narrator’s imaginary is the dominant mover of the action even though it is set in a contemporary Italy of shadowy camorra or mafia menace. The reader will find no easy access to what is, stylistically, the most subtle and habitually indirect meditation on el proceso – Argentina’s so-called ‘process of national reorganization’ – and the Malvinas moment. The minimalist plot is borne on the memory of an older man, working now in his native Italy, as a gardener; finding a self (again) falling in love, (again) lapsing into reminiscence. De Luca’s terse and elliptical style reflects a preoccupation with capturing inseparably from the unfolding plot the way the body feels, the memory weaves, the libido drifts and identities merge and re-separate. Thus, the long Argentine Patagonia and Malvinas sequences of the narrative are interwoven with short memories of the narrator’s early twenties and his present middle-age lingering solitude and mistrust of almost everything and everyone not spontaneously associable with the refuge he has taken in nature. His flight to the Argentina of the nineteen seventies prompted the determining actions of his life; his flight from the Argentina of the post-Falklands era would appear to guarantee an escape from the consequences of his involvement with a country that is pervasively characterized by him as much as a person as a militarist state.

Translation - English L’analisi testuale che segue propone Tre cavalli come uno degli esempi di maggior successo, in termini letterari, di una finzione capace di abbracciare la complessità del conflitto delle Malvine/Falklands. Dal punto di vista tematico si può dire che l’Argentina dell’immaginario dell’io narrante è il motore principale della vicenda, pur essendo questa ambientata in un’Italia contemporanea sovrastata dall’ombra minacciosa di mafia e camorra. Non c’è alcun accesso facile a quanto è, dal punto di vista stilistico, una delle meditazioni più acute e indirette su el proceso – il cosiddetto ‘processo argentino di riorganizzazione nazionale’ – e sul periodo delle Malvine. La trama minimalista è tutta appesa al filo della memoria di un uomo anziano, che adesso lavora come giardiniere nella sua natía Italia, e trova (nuovamente) se stesso, (nuovamente) s’innamora e (nuovamente) si perde in reminescenze. Lo stile terso ed ellittico di De Luca riflette il suo tentativo di catturare, in un modo inseparabile dal dispiegarsi della vicenda, il modo in cui il corpo sente, la memoria intreccia, il desiderio va alla deriva e le identità si confondo e si ri-separano. E così le lunghe sequenze narrative sulla Patagonia argentina e le Malvine s’intrecciano con i più brevi ricordi dei vent’anni dell’io narrante, la sua presente e prolungata solitudine da mezza età, e la sua diffidenza per tutti e tutto che non sia immediatamente associabile al rifugio che ha trovato nella natura. La sua fuga nell’Argentina degli anni Settanta ha dato avvio alle azioni determinanti della sua vita; la sua fuga dall’Argentina post-Falklands sembrerebbe garantirgli una via d’uscita dalle conseguenze del suo coinvolgimento con un paese caratterizzato da lui altrettanto come una persona quanto come uno stato militarista.
