The first problem confronting us (in the thesis) is to define religious education. In doing this, it will be necessary first to consider briefly the nature of religion and then to discuss the scope and goal of religious education. After this, principles governing the choice of materials for religious education may be pointed out and the place and function of Confucianism in religious education for the Chinese suggested.
I. The nature of religion.
As a result of objective study, there is now a measure of agreement among students of religion as to the nature of religion. Religion is now regarded as "a cooperative quest for good life" or "an active striving toward the realization of desired ends or felt values." Religion unifies life by having a world view and by interpreting things in the light of this world view . Religious functions in the life process by creating or reorganizing certain modes of control in the interests of life. Religion is not to be identified with life itself but to be understood as a product of social life only. "Religion is ever waging a warfare, conducting a campaign, striving for fuller life."
