The activity of a translator is to make communication possible between two human beings. That's not the only thing. The work consists in opening yourself to what one person is saying, to receive their message and allow it to go through yourself, to let your sensitivity and imagination feel the 'codified' message, and give it back to another person, allowing them to feel what they would have felt without your mediation. It's not an easy task, based on the translator's sensitivity and imagination.

____

«True translation is not a binary affair between two languages but a triangular affair. The third point of the triangle being what lay behind the words of the original text before it was written. True translation demands a return to the pre-verbal.»
John Berger

«It is the task of the translator to release in his own language that pure language that is under the spell of another, to liberate the language imprisoned in a work in his re-creation of that work.»
Walter Benjamin
