Source text - English Association football, more commonly known as football or soccer, is a team sport played between two teams of eleven players using a spherical ball. It is widely considered to be the most popular sport in the world. The game is played on a rectangular grass or artificial turf field, with a goal in the centre of each of the short ends. The object of the game is to score by driving the ball into the opposing goal. In general play, the goalkeepers are the only players allowed to use their hands or arms to propel the ball; the rest of the team usually use their feet to kick the ball into position, occasionally using their torso or head to intercept a ball in midair. The team that scores the most goals by the end of the match wins. If the score is tied at the end of the game, either a draw is declared or the game goes into extra time and/or a penalty shootout, depending on the format of the competition. The modern game was codified in England following the formation of The Football Association, whose 1863 Laws of the Game created the foundations for the way the sport is played today. Football is governed internationally by the Fédération Internationale de Football Association (International Federation of Association Football), commonly known by the acronym FIFA. The most prestigious international football competition is the FIFA World Cup, held every four years. Football is played in accordance with a set of rules known as the Laws of the Game. The game is played using a single spherical ball, known as the football. Two teams of eleven players each compete to get the ball into the other team's goal (between the posts and under the bar), thereby scoring a goal. The team that has scored more goals at the end of the game is the winner; if both teams have scored an equal number of goals then the game is a draw. Each team is led by a captain. The primary law is that players (other than goalkeepers) may not deliberately handle the ball with their hands or arms during play (though they do use their hands during a throw-in restart). Although players usually use their feet to move the ball around, they may use any part of their bodies other than their hands or arms.[5] Within normal play, all players are free to play the ball in any direction and move throughout the pitch, though the ball cannot be received in an offside position. In typical game play, players attempt to create goal scoring opportunities through individual control of the ball, such as by dribbling, passing the ball to a team-mate, and by taking shots at the goal, which is guarded by the opposing goalkeeper. Opposing players may try to regain control of the ball by intercepting a pass or through tackling the opponent in possession of the ball; however, physical contact between opponents is restricted. Football is generally a free-flowing game, with play stopping only when the ball has left the field of play or when play is stopped by the referee. After a stoppage, play recommences with a specified restart. At a professional level, most matches produce only a few goals. For example, the 2005–06 season of the English Premier League produced an average of 2.48 goals per match.[7] The Laws of the Game do not specify any player positions other than goalkeeper,[8] but a number of specialised roles have evolved. Broadly, these include three main categories: strikers, or forwards, whose main task is to score goals; defenders, who specialise in preventing their opponents from scoring; and midfielders, who dispossess the opposition and keep possession of the ball in order to pass it to the forwards on their team. Players in these positions are referred to as outfield players, in order to discern them from the single goalkeeper. These positions are further subdivided according to the area of the field in which the player spends most time. For example, there are central defenders, and left and right midfielders. The ten outfield players may be arranged in any combination. The number of players in each position determines the style of the team's play; more forwards and fewer defenders creates a more aggressive and offensive-minded game, while the reverse creates a slower, more defensive style of play. While players typically spend most of the game in a specific position, there are few restrictions on player movement, and players can switch positions at any time.[9] The layout of a team's players is known as a formation. Defining the team's formation and tactics is usually the prerogative of the team's manager. History The modern rules of football are based on the mid-19th century efforts to standardize the widely varying forms of football played at the public schools of England. The Cambridge Rules, first drawn up at Cambridge University in 1848, were particularly influential in the development of subsequent codes, including association football. The Cambridge Rules were written at Trinity College, Cambridge, at a meeting attended by representatives from Eton, Harrow, Rugby, Winchester and Shrewsbury schools. They were not universally adopted. During the 1850s, many clubs unconnected to schools or universities were formed throughout the English-speaking world, to play various forms of football. Some came up with their own distinct codes of rules, most notably the Sheffield Football Club, formed by former public school pupils in 1857,[11] which led to formation of a Sheffield FA in 1867. In 1862, John Charles Thring of Uppingham School also devised an influential set of rules.[12] These ongoing efforts contributed to the formation of The Football Association (The FA) in 1863, which first met on the morning of 26 October 1863 at the Freemasons' Tavern in Great Queen Street, London.[13] The Freemason's Tavern was the setting for five more meetings between October and December, which eventually produced the first comprehensive set of rules. At the final meeting, the first FA treasurer, the representative from Blackheath, withdrew his club from the FA over the removal of two draft rules at the previous meeting: the first allowed for running with the ball in hand; the second for obstructing such a run by hacking (kicking an opponent in the shins), tripping and holding. Other English rugby football clubs followed this lead and did not join the FA, or subsequently left the FA and instead in 1871 formed the Rugby Football Union. The eleven remaining clubs, under the charge of Ebenezer Cobb Morley, went on to ratify the original thirteen laws of the game.[13] These rules included handling of the ball by "marks" and the lack of a crossbar, rules which made it remarkably similar to Victorian rules football being developed at that time in Australia. The Sheffield FA played by its own rules until the 1870s with the FA absorbing some of its rules until there was little difference between the games The laws of the game are currently determined by the International Football Association Board (IFAB). The Board was formed in 1886[14] after a meeting in Manchester of The Football Association, the Scottish Football Association, the Football Association of Wales, and the Irish Football Association. The world's oldest football competition is the FA Cup, which was founded by C. W. Alcock and has been contested by English teams since 1872. The first official international football match took place in 1872 between Scotland and England in Glasgow, again at the instigation of C. W. Alcock. England is home to the world's first football league, which was founded in Birmingham in 1888 by Aston Villa director William McGregor.[15] The original format contained 12 clubs from the Midlands and the North of England. The Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA), the international football body, was formed in Paris in 1904 and declared that they would adhere to Laws of the Game of the Football Association.[16] The growing popularity of the international game led to the admittance of FIFA representatives to the International Football Association Board in 1913. The board currently consists of four representatives from FIFA and one representative from each of the four British associations. Today, football is played at a professional level all over the world. Millions of people regularly go to football stadiums to follow their favourite teams,[17] while billions more watch the game on television.[18] A very large number of people also play football at an amateur level. According to a survey conducted by FIFA published in 2001, over 240 million people from more than 200 countries regularly play football.[19] Its simple rules and minimal equipment requirements have no doubt aided its spread and growth in popularity. In many parts of the world football evokes great passions and plays an important role in the life of individual fans, local communities, and even nations; it is therefore often claimed to be the most popular sport in the world. ESPN has spread the claim that the Côte d'Ivoire national football team helped secure a truce to the nation's civil war in 2005. By contrast, football is widely considered to be the final proximate cause in the Football War in June 1969 between El Salvador and Honduras.[20] The sport also exacerbated tensions at the beginning of the Yugoslav wars of the 1990s, when a match between Dinamo Zagreb and Red Star Belgrade devolved into rioting in March 1990. Players, equipment and officials Each team consists of a maximum of eleven players (excluding substitutes), one of whom must be the goalkeeper. Competition rules may state a minimum number of players required to constitute a team; this is usually seven. Goalkeepers are the only players allowed to play the ball with their hands or arms, provided they do so within the penalty area in front of their own goal. Though there are a variety of positions in which the outfield (non-goalkeeper) players are strategically placed by a coach, these positions are not defined or required by the Laws.[8] The basic equipment or kit players are required to wear includes a shirt, shorts, socks, footwear and adequate shin guards. Headgear is not a required piece of basic equipment, but players today may choose to wear it to protect themselves from head injury. Players are forbidden to wear or use anything that is dangerous to themselves or another player, such as jewellery or watches. The goalkeeper must wear clothing that is easily distinguishable from that worn by the other players and the match officials.[24] A number of players may be replaced by substitutes during the course of the game. The maximum number of substitutions permitted in most competitive international and domestic league games is three, though the permitted number may vary in other competitions or in friendly matches. Common reasons for a substitution include injury, tiredness, ineffectiveness, a tactical switch, or timewasting at the end of a finely poised game. In standard adult matches, a player who has been substituted may not take further part in a match.[25] A game is officiated by a referee, who has "full authority to enforce the Laws of the Game in connection with the match to which he has been appointed" (Law 5), and whose decisions are final. The referee is assisted by two assistant referees. In many high-level games there is also a fourth official who assists the referee and may replace another official should the need arise.[26] Ball in and out of play Under the Laws, the two basic states of play during a game are ball in play and ball out of play. From the beginning of each playing period with a kick-off until the end of the playing period, the ball is in play at all times, except when either the ball leaves the field of play, or play is stopped by the referee. When the ball becomes out of play, play is restarted by one of eight restart methods depending on how it went out of play: • Kick-off: following a goal by the opposing team, or to begin each period of play.[6] • Goal kick: when the ball has wholly crossed the goal line without a goal having been scored and having last been touched by a player of the attacking team; awarded to defending team.[36] • Corner kick: when the ball has wholly crossed the goal line without a goal having been scored and having last been touched by a player of the defending team; awarded to attacking team.[37] • Indirect free kick: awarded to the opposing team following "non-penal" fouls, certain technical infringements, or when play is stopped to caution or send-off an opponent without a specific foul having occurred. A goal may not be scored directly from an indirect free kick.[38] • Direct free kick: awarded to fouled team following certain listed "penal" fouls.[38] • Penalty kick: awarded to the fouled team following a foul usually punishable by a direct free kick but that has occurred within their opponent's penalty area.[39] • Dropped-ball: occurs when the referee has stopped play for any other reason, such as a serious injury to a player, interference by an external party, or a ball becoming defective. Misconduct A foul occurs when a player commits an offence listed in the Laws of the Game while the ball is in play. The offences that constitute a foul are listed in Law 12. Handling the ball deliberately, tripping an opponent, or pushing an opponent, are examples of "penal fouls", punishable by a direct free kick or penalty kick depending on where the offence occurred. Other fouls are punishable by an indirect free kick.[5] The referee may punish a player or substitute's misconduct by a caution (yellow card) or sending-off (red card). A second yellow card at the same game leads to a red card, and therefore to a sending-off. A player given a yellow card is said to have been "booked", the referee writing the player's name in his official notebook. If a player has been sent off, no substitute can be brought on in their place. Misconduct may occur at any time, and while the offences that constitute misconduct are listed, the definitions are broad. In particular, the offence of "unsporting behaviour" may be used to deal with most events that violate the spirit of the game, even if they are not listed as specific offences. A referee can show a yellow or red card to a player, substitute or substituted player. Non-players such as managers and support staff cannot be shown the yellow or red card, but may be expelled from the technical area if they fail to conduct themselves in a responsible manner.[5] Rather than stopping play, the referee may allow play to continue if doing so will benefit the team against which an offence has been committed. This is known as "playing an advantage". The referee may "call back" play and penalize the original offence if the anticipated advantage does not ensue within a short period, typically taken to be four to five seconds. Even if an offence is not penalised due to advantage being played, the offender may still be sanctioned for misconduct at the next stoppage of play. Governing bodies The recognised international governing body of football (and associated games, such as futsal and beach soccer) is the Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA). The FIFA headquarters are located in Zürich. Six regional confederations are associated with FIFA; these are: • Asia: Asian Football Confederation (AFC) • Africa: Confederation of African Football (CAF) • Central/North America & Caribbean: Confederation of North, Central American and Caribbean Association Football (CONCACAF; also known as The Football Confederation) • Europe: Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) • Oceania: Oceania Football Confederation (OFC) • South America: Confederación Sudamericana de Fútbol/Confederação Sud-americana de Futebol (South American Football Confederation; CONMEBOL) National associations oversee football within individual countries. These are generally synonymous with sovereign states, (for example: the Fédération Camerounaise de Football in Cameroon) but also include a smaller number of associations responsible for sub-national entities or autonomous regions (for example the Scottish Football Association in Scotland) . 208 national associations are affiliated both with FIFA and with their respective continental confederations; an additional 13 are affiliated to continental confederations but not to FIFA. Some of the football associations not recognised by FIFA are affiliated to the Nouvelle Fédération-Board (NF-Board). International competitions The major international competition in football is the World Cup, organised by FIFA. This competition takes place over a four-year period. More than 190 national teams compete in qualifying tournaments within the scope of continental confederations for a place in the finals. The finals tournament, which is held every four years, involves 32 national teams competing over a four-week period.[40] The 2006 FIFA World Cup took place in Germany; in 2010 it will be held in South Africa.[41] There has been a football tournament at every Summer Olympic Games since 1900, except at the 1932 games in Los Angeles. Before the inception of the World Cup, the Olympics (especially during the 1920s) had the same status as the World Cup. Originally, the event was for amateurs only,[16] however, since the 1984 Summer Olympics professional players have been permitted, albeit with certain restrictions which prevent countries from fielding their strongest sides. Currently, the Olympic men's tournament is played at Under-23 level. In the past the Olympics have allowed a restricted number of over-age players per team;[42] but that practice ceased in the 2008 Olympics. The Olympic competition is not generally considered to carry the same international significance and prestige as the World Cup. A women's tournament was added in 1996; in contrast to the men's event, full international sides without age restrictions play the women’s Olympic tournament. It thus carries international prestige considered comparable to that of the FIFA Women's World Cup. After the World Cup, the most important international football competitions are the continental championships, which are organised by each continental confederation and contested between national teams. These are the European Championship (UEFA), the Copa América (CONMEBOL), African Cup of Nations (CAF), the Asian Cup (AFC), the CONCACAF Gold Cup (CONCACAF) and the OFC Nations Cup (OFC). The FIFA Confederations Cup is contested by the winners of all 6 continental championships, the current FIFA World Cup champions and the country which is hosting the Confederations Cup. This is generally regarded as a warm up tournament for the upcoming FIFA World Cup and does not carry the same prestige as the World Cup itself. The most prestigious competitions in club football are the respective continental championships, which are generally contested between national champions, for example the UEFA Champions League in Europe and the Copa Libertadores de América in South America. The winners of each continental competition contest the FIFA Club World Cup. UEFA Champions League The UEFA Champions League (usually referred to as simply the Champions League or historically as the European Cup) is an annual Association football cup competition organised by UEFA since 1955 for the top football clubs in Europe. It is the most prestigious club trophy in European football. Prior to 1992 the tournament was officially called the European Champion Clubs' Cup but was usually referred to as simply the European Cup or European Champions' Cup. The competition was initially a straight knockout competition open only to the champion club of each country. During the 1990s the tournament began to be expanded, incorporating a round-robin group phase and more teams. Europe's strongest national leagues now provide up to four teams each for the competition. The UEFA Champions League should not be confused with the UEFA Europa League, formerly known as the UEFA Cup. The tournament consists of several stages. In the present format it begins in mid-July with three knockout qualifying rounds. The 16 surviving teams join 16 seeded teams in the group stage, in which there are eight groups consisting of four teams each. The eight group winners and eight runners-up enter the final knockout phase, which ends with the final match in May. The title has been won by 21 different clubs, 12 of which have won the title more than once. The all-time record-holders are Real Madrid, who have won the competition nine times. Barcelona are the current champions. Since the tournament changed name and structure in 1992, no club has managed consecutive wins. The winner of the UEFA Champions League qualifies to the FIFA Club World Cup (which replaced the Intercontinental Cup since 2005) as well as the UEFA Super Cup. History The tournament was inaugurated in 1955, at the suggestion of the French sports journalist and editor of L'Équipe Gabriel Hanot,[1] as a reaction to a declaration on the part of Wolverhampton Wanderers as being "Champions of the World" by the British press, after a successful run of European friendlies in the 1950s. The tournament was conceived as a continental competition for winners of the European national football leagues, as the European Champion Clubs' Cup, abbreviated to European Cup. The competition began as the 1955–56 using a two-leg knockout format where the teams would play two matches, one at home and one away, and the team with the highest overall score qualifying for the next round of the competition. Until 1992, entry was restricted to the teams that won their national league championships, plus the current European Cup holder. In the 1992–93 season, the format was changed to include a group stage and the tournament was renamed the UEFA Champions League. There have since been numerous changes to eligibility for the competition, the number of qualifying rounds and the group structure. In 1997–98, eligibility was expanded to include the runners-up from some countries according to UEFA's coefficient ranking list. Between 1960 and 2004, the winner of the tournament qualified for the now defunct Intercontinental Cup against the winner of the Copa Libertadores of South America. Format Qualification As of 2009, the UEFA Champions League commences with a round-robin group stage of 32 teams, which is preceded by two qualification 'streams' for teams that do not receive direct entry to the tournament proper. The two streams are divided between teams qualified by virtue of being league champions, and those qualified by virtue of finishing 2nd-4th in their national championship. The number of teams that each association enters into the UEFA Champions League is based upon the UEFA coefficients of the member associations. These coefficients are generated by the results of clubs representing each association during the previous five Champions League and UEFA Cup seasons. The higher an association's coefficient, the more teams represent the association in the Champions League, and the fewer qualification rounds the association's teams must compete in. The number of places in the competition is currently allocated as so: • associations ranked 1 to 3 have four positions, • associations ranked 4 to 6 have three positions, • associations ranked 7 to 15 have two positions, • associations ranked 16 or lower have one position. Of these, 22 teams receive automatic qualification for the group stage, as follows: • 1st-3rd ranked teams of associations ranked 1 to 3 • 1st-2nd ranked teams of associations ranked 4 to 6 • 1st ranked team of associations ranked 7 to 12 • Champions League holders The situation with holders of the Champions League has not always been clearly defined. There was controversy when Liverpool won the competition in 2004–05 but finished outside the top four in the FA Premier League. The Football Association ruled that Everton, who finished fourth in the Premier League, should get the final English place in the 2005–06 European Cup. UEFA came to an agreement that both Merseyside rivals would be allowed to enter the competition with Liverpool starting from the first qualifying round and Everton starting from the third qualifying round. This confusion resulted in the current ruling, whereby if the European Cup winners fail to finish in one of its national league's qualifying positions, it will take the place of the lowest placed team in its association. The superseded team will go to the UEFA Europa League. 5 of the remaining ten qualifying places are granted to the winners of a four round qualifying tournament between the remaining 39 or 38 national champions, within which those champions from associations with higher coefficients receive byes to later rounds. The other 5 are granted to the winners of a two round qualifying tournament between the 15 clubs from the associations ranked 1-15, which have qualified based upon finishing 2nd-4th in their national league. In addition to sporting criteria, any club must be licensed by its national association to participate in the Champions league. To obtain a license, club must meet certain stadium, infrastructure and finance requirements. In 2005-06, Liverpool and Artmedia Bratislava of Slovakia became the first teams to reach the Champions League group phase after playing in all three qualifying rounds. In 2008-09, both BATE and Anorthosis Famagusta achieved the same feat. Barcelona, Manchester United, and Porto are the teams that have appeared most often in the group stage: fourteen times each. FC Porto have only won the tournament once since the establishment of the group stage (2004), Manchester United (1999 and 2008) and Barcelona (2006 and 2009) have both won it twice. Between 2003 and 2008, no differentiation was made between champions and non-champions in qualification. The sixteen top ranked teams spread across the biggest domestic leagues qualified directly for the tournament group stage. Prior to this, three preliminary knockout qualifying rounds whittled down the remaining teams, with different teams starting in different rounds. Tournament The tournament proper begins with a group stage of 32 teams, divided into 8 groups. Seeding is used whilst making the draw for this stage, whilst teams from the same country may not be drawn into groups together. Each team meets the others in its group home and away in a round-robin format. The top two teams from each group progress to the round of 16, which commences the knock-out tournament. Source text - English A Functional Approach: Communicative Language Teaching Richards and Rodgers (1986) describe Communicative Language Teaching (CLT) as an approach rather than a method, since it is defined in rather broad terms and represents a philosophy of teaching that is based on com¬municative language use. CLT has developed from the writings of British applied linguists such as Wilkins, Widdowson, Brumfit, Candlin, and oth¬ers, as well as American educators such as Savignon (1983), all of whom emphasize notional-functional concepts and communicative competence, rather than grammatical structures, as central to language teaching (Richards and Rodgers 1986, p. 65). Although the movement first began with a reconceptualization of the teaching syllabus in notional-functional terms, CLT has broadened to encompass a wide range of principles for developing communicative competence. Richards and Rodgers (1986), citing Finocchiaro and Brumfit (1983), outline 22 major distinctive features of this approach. Some of these principles are summarized below. 1. Meaning is of primary importance in CLT, and contextualization is a basic principle. 2. Attempts by learners to communicate with the language are encour¬aged from the beginning of instruction. The new language system will be learned best by struggling to communicate one's own mean¬ing and by negotiation of meaning through interaction with others. 3. Sequencing of materials is determined by the content, function, and/or meaning that will maintain students' interest. 4. Judicious use of the native language is acceptable where feasible, and translation may be used when students find it beneficial or nec¬essary. 5. Activities and strategies for learning are varied according to learner preferences and needs. 6. Communicative competence, with an emphasis on fluency and acceptable language use, is the goal of instruction. "Accuracy is judged not in the abstract, but in context" (p. 92). (Based on Finocchiaro and Brumfit 1983, pp. 91-93, cited in Richards and Rodgers 1986, p. 67-68.) Richards and Rodgers state that although CLT does not claim a particular theory of language learning as its basis, there are several theoretical premises that can be deduced from a consideration of the approach: 1. The communication principle: Activities that involve communication promote language learning. 2. The task principle: Activities that involve the completion of real- world tasks promote learning. 3. The meaningfulness principle: Learners must be engaged in meaning¬ful and authentic language use for learning to take place. (Richards and Rodgers 1986, p. 72). Sample Classroom Activities Because CLT is a comprehensive approach and not a method, it is difficult to characterize it by any one sample lesson plan. However, the kinds of classroom activities that would be representative of CLT include interac¬tive language games, information sharing activities, task-based activities, social interaction, and functional communication practice (Richards and Rodgers 1986). Savignon (1983) suggests designing the curriculum to include language arts (or language analysis activities), language-for-a-pur-pose (content-based and immersion) activities, personalized language use, theater arts (including simulations, role-plays, and social interaction games), and language use beyond the classroom (including inviting L2 speakers into the classroom and planning activities that take learners out¬side the classroom to engage in real-world encounters). She gives many examples of communicative language teaching ideas that can be used to generate a classroom atmosphere conducive to the development of com¬municative competence in all skill areas. For a more complete treatment of communicative language teaching, consult the sources cited above, as well as Brumfit and Johnson (1979), Littlewood (1981), Finocchiaro and Brumfit (1983), and Yalden (1987). Proficiency Orientation Clearly many of the tenets of CLT are congruent with the principles out-lined at the beginning of this chapter. Communicative language teaching, like any instruction oriented toward proficiency goals, is not bound to a particular methodology or curricular design, but represents a flexible approach to teaching that is responsive to learner needs and preferences. In many ways, CLT represents a repertoire of teaching ideas rather than a fixed set of methodological procedures, and as such is not easily defined or evaluated. The congruence of any particular version of CLT with proficien¬cy goals will depend on the choices made by the program designers and instructors. Modern Adaptations of the Direct Method Although the two approaches to be described next are in some ways quite different from one another, each has evolved to some extent from direct methodology. Total Physical Response Background This approach is based on the belief that listening comprehension should be developed fully, as it is with children learning their native language, before any active oral participation from students is expected. Further, it is based on the belief that skills can be more rapidly assimilated if the teacher appeals to the students' kinesthetic-sensory system. The approach, developed by James J. Asher, utilizes oral commands that students carry out to show their understanding. As with the direct method, the target language is the exclusive language of instruction. Students are exposed to language that is based in the here-and-now and that is easily understood through mime and example. Major Characteristics Asher, Kusudo, and de la Torre (1974) summarize three key ideas that underlie the Total Physical Response approach: 1. Understanding of the spoken language must be developed in advance of speaking. 2. Understanding and retention is best achieved through movement of the students' bodies in response to commands. The imperative form of the language is a powerful tool because it can be used to manipu¬late students' behavior and guide them towards understanding through action. Asher et al. state that their research indicates that most of the grammatical structures of the target language and hun¬dreds of vocabulary items can be learned through the skillful use of the imperative by the instructor. 3.Students should never be forced to speak before they are ready. As the tar¬get language is internalized, speaking will emerge naturally. Sample Classroom Activities A few examples of commands students respond to in relatively early train-ing will serve to illustrate this methodology. The activities described are presented in Asher, Kusudo, and de la Torre (1974). The reader may want to read this or other source material for a more complete understanding of the way the method works. (See also Asher 1982.) Listening Training. Students sit in a semicircle around the instructor. The instructor asks them to be silent, listen to commands in Spanish, and then do exactly what she does. The students are encouraged "to respond rapidly without hesitation and to make a distinct, robust response with their bodies" (p. 27). For example, when the teacher commands students to run by saying jCorran!, students are to run with gusto. Commands such as "Stand up! Walk! Stop! Turn! Walk! Stop! Turn! Sit down!" are then execut¬ed in succession in Spanish. The instructor simultaneously executes the commands as they are given, accompanied by the two students seated beside her. This routine is repeated several times until individual students indicate that they are willing to try it alone without the instructor acting as a model. Each variation of the routine is different to avoid the memoriza¬tion of a fixed sequence of behaviors. Next, commands are expanded to full sentences, such as "Walk to the door! Walk to the window! Walk to the table! Touch the table!" As students learn more vocabulary in this way, "surprises and novelty" are introduced, and the instructor begins to use playful, bizarre, and "zany" directives to keep students' interest high. Three samples that Asher et al. (1974) give are the following: When Henry runs to the blackboard and draws a funny picture of Molly, Molly will throw her purse at Henry. Henry, would you prefer to serve a cold drink to Molly, or would you rather have Eugene kick you in the leg? Rosemary, dance with Samuel, and stick your tongue out at Hilda. Hilda, run to Rosemary, hit her on the arm, pull her to her chair and you dance with Samuel (pp. 27-28). Production. Asher et al. state that after about ten hours of training in listening, students are "invited but not pressured" to reverse roles with the instructor and give their own commands in Spanish. The instructor then performs in response to the students' commands. After this is successfully done, about 20 percent of all class time will be spent in role-reversal of this type. Later, skits are prepared and performed by students, and still later, problem-solving situations are used. In this latter activity, students are pre-sented with an unexpected difficulty in a typical survival situation or other setting in a Latin country and are expected to talk their way through the situation to a solution. Reading and Writing. Although there is no formal training in reading and writing in the approach as described by Asher et al., they do state that the instructor spent a few minutes at the end of each class session writing structures or vocabulary on the blackboard for students requesting explanation. Students generally copied the expressions into their notebooks. No English equivalents were given. Most expressions were those already heard during the class session. Proficiency Orientation Methodology, as described by Asher et al. (1974), is affectively appealing to many students: the atmosphere in the class is warm and accepting, allowing students to try out their skills in creative ways. The focus on lis¬tening skills in the early phases of instruction allows students to experi¬ence the new language in a low-anxiety environment, and the use of techniques to act out what is understood ensures that comprehension of the language is taking place. It seems that TPR is not really designed to be a comprehensive "method" in and of itself, but represents instead a useful set of teaching ideas and techniques that can be integrated into other methodologies for certain instructional purposes. TPR techniques have been used effectively by many practitioners, and methodologies such as the Natural Approach, to be described next, include them among their instructional strategies. Potential Drawbacks If TPR is the only strategy used for language teaching, there may be somesubstantial limitations on what can be effectively accomplished in terms ofproficiency goals. Although "with imagination, almost any aspect of the linguistic code for the target language could be communicated using commands" (Asher et al. 1974, p. 26), the functional use of language as described in the proficiency guidelines and the contexts normally used in the target culture do not seem to be a natural outcome of this methodolo¬gy. There is also very little emphasis on the development of accuracy in Asher's description of the method. The Natural Approach Background Terrell (1977, 1982) based his methodology on Krashen's theory of second language acquisition, discussed in detail in Chapter 2. Terrell's main premise is that "it is possible for students in a classroom situation to learn to communicate in a second language" (1977, p. 325). His definition of communicative competence is interesting in that it resembles the descrip¬tion of Level 1/1 (Intermediate) proficiency: / use this term to mean that a student can understand the essential points of what a native speaker says to him in a real communication situation and can respond in such a way that the native speaker interprets the response with little or no effort and without errors that are so distracting that they interfere drastically with communication. I suggest that the level of competence needed for minimal communication acceptable to native speakers is much lower than that supposed by most teachers. Specifically, I suggest that if we are to raise our expectations for oral competence in communication we must lower our expectations for structural accuracy (1977, p. 326, emphasis added). From this statement, it seems that the goal of the Natural Approach is set at an Intermediate (survival) proficiency in the second language, at least in oral/aural skills. This will have important implications for class¬room practice. According to Higgs and Clifford (1982), "if the goal is to produce students with Level 1 survival skills, then the optimum curricu¬lum mix would be ... a primary emphasis on the teaching and practice of vocabulary" (p. 73), with little emphasis on structural accuracy. This principle holds true in some respects in the Natural Approach, as we shall see below. Савіньйон (1983) радить розробляти учбовий план, котрий би вміщував у собі мистецтво мови (або мовний аналіз), спеціалізована мова (склад якої базується на поглибленні), уособлене використання мови, театральне мистецтво (включаючи імітацію, рольові ігри та ігри соціальної взаємодії) і використання мови за межами класу (включаючи запрошення мовців, які вивчають мову як другу іноземну, до класної кімнати, і планування діяльності таким чином, щоб заволікти учнів за межами класної кімнати до реальності випадкових зустрічей). Вона дає багато прикладів ідей вивчення мови, котрі можна використовувати, щоб створити у класі сприятливу атмосферу для розвитку комунікативних можливостей на всіх рівнях. В багатьох випадках комунікативне вивчення мови представляє цілий спектр ідей щодо вивчення мови краще, ніж чітко фіксовані методологічні процедури, виходячи з цього, це важко визначити і оцінити. Відповідність декількох виняткових версій комунікативного вивчення мови з досвідченістю буде залежати від вибору, зробленого програмою, розробником та вчителем. Новітні адаптації до Прямого Методу Хоч два підходи, котрі будуть описані далі з декількох сторін, відрізняються один від одного, кожен з них розвивався до певного часу за прямою методологією. Повна фізична відповідність Походження Цей підхід базується на вірі в повне розуміння прослуханого, так, як з дітьми, котрі вивчають свою рідну мову, до можливої активної усної участі студентів. Далі це базується на вірі в те, що уміння можуть швидко засвоюватись коли вчитель звертається до кінесцетично-сенсорної системи студентів. У підході, розробленому Джеймсом Дж. Ашером, використовуються усні команди студентам, котрі вони мають виконати, щоб показати своє розуміння. Так як у прямому методі основна мова є винятковою для вивчення. Студентам більш доступна та мова, яка базується на сучасності, і котру легко зрозуміти за допомогою міміки та прикладу. Головні характеристики Ашер, Кусу до та де ла Торре (1974) підсумовують три основні ідеї, котрі підкреслюють повну фізичну відповідність підходу: 1. Наказова форма у мові – це потужний інструмент, бо за допомогою нього можна керувати поведінкою студентів і скеровувати їх на розуміння через роботу. . Ашер та інші встановлюють, що їх дослідження показує, що більшість граматичних структур основної мови та тисячі словникових одиниць можуть бути вивчені за допомогою майстерного використання викладачем наказового способу. 3. Студенти не повинні примушуватись говорити, поки вони до цього не готові. Як тільки мова буде засвоєна, розмова буде виходити природною. Приклади роботи класу Деякі команди, на які студенти реагують, у відносно ранніх тренуваннях будуть слугувати ілюструванню методології. Студенти зацікавлені відповідати швидко і без вагань, щоб досягти ясності, міцність відповідає їх тілу (с. 27). Природній Метод Походження Террел (1977, 1982) основував свою методологію на теорію Крашена про здобуття другої мови, деталі якої обговорюються у другій частині. Головна передумова Террела полягала у тому, що «студенту в умовах класу можливо вивчати та розмовляти другою мовою» (1977 р. с. 325). Його визначення вмінню говорити цікаве тим, що воно схоже на опис уміння на рівні 1/1 (середній). Я використовую цей термін, щоб студент міг зрозуміти головні частини того, що йому говорить носій мови у реальному спілкуванні, а також відповідати йому таким чином, як носій мови тлумачить свою відповідь за допомогою невеликих зусиль та без помилок, котрі заважають та відволікають від спілкування. Я пропоную, щоб рівень знань, котрий відповідав би необхідному мінімуму спілкування, був прийнятний для носіїв мови, котрий нижче за той, що пропонує більшість вчителів. Особливо, я пропоную, що якщо ми піднімемо наші очікування щодо вміння говорити усно підчас спілкування, ми повинні понизити очікування від структурних умінь (1977 р. с. 326, додана емфаза). Із цього твердження здається, що природній метод – це набір проміжних (життєвих умінь) у другій мові, з рештою в усних/слухових здібностях. Це зробить великі внесення для практики в класі. За Хіггсом та Кліфордом (1982), «якщо ціль створити у студента знання першого рівня, тоді курс навчання буде змішаним… перша емфаза вивчення та практики словникового запасу» (с. 73), з невеликим нахилом на знання структури.
