I Designer e l’illuminazione
1.Eventi temporanei
Luce come forma del tempo
Dan Dorell*
*arch.

Designers and Lighting
The Space of Light
In our contemporary reality, design is an increasingly difficult matter, above all for the designer. In fact, the designer today must navigate complex paths, in which the danger of simplification, the increasingly stringent logic imposed by the usefulness of the object, not to mention its corresponding technology, are considered as “problematic” things to manage, or in some cases to scale down, in order to bring back a more direct and natural approach to our dialogue and relationship with things and the environment around us. And still, when facing the theme of light in practice, these and other considerations really seem to come together. In our Dossier, you will find a series of interesting testimonials, with a few examples from our noted virtuosos about the privileged relationship it is possible to create between design and lighting projects, whether from a temporary event to a concept about a light object, more than simply an architectural space.
1.Temporary Events
Light as a Form of Time
Dan Dorell*
*arch. Dan Dorell – DGTarchitects, Paris
DGT is an architectural studio which works in various types of buildings and scenery. “Light, Time, Space” is an architectural lighting installation produced by Toshiba in Milan.
When the DGT team collaborates on a project, it always strives to best interpret how much specifically can be achieved for a particular project: the space, the moment and the surrounding environment. As architects, our directive is to work with solid materials where light will define or accentuate each form. In the installation for Tosiba in Milan, light was the principal material.
The concept. The product we were presenting in this context was the LED lamp: the desire expressed by the client was to propose a thought about the idea of light contributing to the “global culture of light”, more than simply showing off the product itself. Light was, and had to be, the center of this installation and the specifications of this particular LED had to be highlighted in our installation. The challenge of the “Light, Time, Space” installation was therefore to create an architecture of light, providing the visitor with the opportunity to live the experience conceived from the research conducted by our team, initiated from observation of natural phenomenon, like in the case of rainbows, where particles of light become visible due to refraction without being reflected in a solid material (which really happens in Inside, which is the indoor environment and also the high-point of this exhibition). One of the advantages of the LED light is the extremely rapid switch from on/off, less than a second. Our work was concentrated therefore on that technical aspect and attempted to show the time of light: setting the frequency at 50Hz with a constant sequence of on/off transitions of 5μs a 2000μs in one program. The shortest time of 5μs (egg. 0.432s of light / 24 hours) may be perceived as a point of light and can be transformed into a line of light in 2000μs as a refraction in water. A full-scale mock-up was built to develop the materialization of the LED light in water.
The context. The location which was selected for the installation helped shape the formal idea itself for this event. Also, it allowed for the presentation of a coherent introduction to this architecture of pure light with the entrance to the tunnel of light (Approach) which embodies the fact that light is not always what you think (it appears to be a seamless white tunnel, an entry for the installation where apparently a fluorescent light is reflected in a line of water on the floor, but it in reality it is natural light coming from above). A bit before the main installation, in the second space of the installation (Courtyard) the reflections of the waves of two pools on the old wall, which form constant ripples on the water’s surface, are lit by the sun during they day, and by LED by night. The ripples, then, are reflected on a single wall, the only remaining part of the 100-year old building, the undulating body of water soaks the remainder of the wall with its moments of light. The reflections of the waves on the aged wall prepare us this way for the power of light, which can transform a wall in ruins into a dance of projections or – as we have seen – an installation of light appearing as diamonds.

Translation - English Re: Insurance of goods for export
Dear Director,
It takes a lot of work for our company to export its products; the food comes packaged in cans and glass, stored in boxes.
We want to consider entering into an insurance policy with you, which would apply to various shipments; therefore, we invite you to submit an insurance policy proposal in the form most convenient for you.
In general, our shipments are made to the following destinations:
- Mediterranean ports;
- the port at Mar Rosso;
- Indian and Pakistani ports
A significant part of our business is in shipments via rail to England, but for that insurance our clients prefer to enter into contracts in England with British companies. This does not exclude that a possible offer from you at a lower rate may be accepted by our customers across the Channel.
The insurance policy must cover all risks, including breakage, with no deductible; we would like also to include risks of bad stowage.
The insurance coverage will start in our factory in Cagliari and will end with the delivery of the goods in the warehouses of our buyers.
We look forward to hearing from you, and send you our best regards.
French to English: From the electric car to sustainable mobility General field: Bus/Financial Detailed field: Automotive / Cars & Trucks
Translation - English From the electric car to sustainable mobility
The electric car is not a new technology. For a century, about every ten years it has had a resurgence which wasn’t successful, up until now, undermining the dominant design of the thermal vehicle. Current attempts are presented at a more favorable moment. Success will not come from a technological breakthrough, even though progress with the batteries is considerable, but rather from an entirely new way of managing innovation.
The design of the electric vehicle covers the entire vehicle instead of just the electrification of a conventional vehicle. The car is part of an overall project for electric mobility where services play a key role. It serves to articulate the business models of different stakeholders (manufacturers, national or local governments, energy providers, operators of transportation services). Finally, it integrates the dynamic learning in the market, ranging from innovators and early adopters to latecomers.
About the speaker : Christophe MIDLER

Source text - French « FRENCH FORBIDDEN ! »
Translation - English “FRENCH FORBIDDEN!”
Le Quotien du médecin – Tuesday, July 4, 2000
The note of a hospital group of the AP-HP that indicated, “we will no longer keep” in its scientific evaluations, the articles published in French, provoked an uproar among the major medical journals of the Hexagon.
There was a unanimous expression of their “strong disapproval” which means “more than ever” they wish to defend their “legitimate field of editorial expression,” “French Forbidden!” fired off “The Quotidien” [The Daily Paper], in one of its editions on February 2. At the start of the matter was a note bearing the letterhead of the group Cochin-Saint-Vincent-de-Paul-La Roche-Guyon. “Articles in French will not be accepted anymore,” in the scientific evaluation, said the document. Many heads of service have immediately expressed their outrage. Today, it was the turn of a large number of specialists, people held in public esteem, editors, submissions selectors, and members of editorial boards. In a memorandum, they expressed, “in a united voice” their “strongest disapproval taken by the administration,” of the Cohin Group. The responsible parties of the biggest French medical journals declared themselves, “well-placed” to know “that there exists in the medical press in the French language, indexed and of very good quality,” however, realistically, they recognized, “the current preeminence of English in international science and the necessity for all medicine to practice in this language. In the current context, he admits, it is in fact in indispensible to know how to write these articles in English and to publish them in the big medical journals in the English language.” As such, the scientists judge that it is “very regrettable that these authorities charged with defending French research make, with so little subtlety, these declarations of this outcome.”
“The unchallenged supremacy of English”
Although not mentioned by name, it is Vincent Courtillot who is the target. The director of Research at the Ministry of National Education has in effect declared in the “Quotidien”:
It is sad, but that’s how it is today, it is the language of the scientific community (...) The supremacy of English could seem without division today (...) I think, on the other hand, that to write books (in French) for upper-level courses, popular articles in your newspapers, that remains a fundamental activity.” The people heading the medical magazines protest against such sharing. They are not in agreement that restricting the “legitimate field of editorial expression in the French language is only in education and in information only. Because this would only limit us, as well as our readers, from our own source of our knowledge.” The petitioners consider that it is “therefore necessary, more than ever, to defend and advance the so-called French magazines “of publication.”
“The stakes are high”, underlines Pierre Dutilleul, general President-Director of Masson, a major player in medical publishing with his fifty journals, his base of four thousand titles and his three hundred new annual publications, and who reaffirms, in this occasion, his “desire to defend with determination a quality medical press in the French language.” Like the writer, without a dark sense of humor, the protestors, repeating the adage of their American colleagues, “publish or perish”, “we don’t want that our motto become, ‘publish and perish’ “.

9. Water Tower
3.0 Products
Main products to be sold on both domestic and foreign markets through implementation of this investment project are gray iron castings.
Gray iron was the original "cast iron", and is an iron alloy characterized by its relatively high carbon content (usually 2% to 4%). When molten cast iron solidifies some of the carbon precipitates as graphite, forming tiny, irregular flakes within the crystal structure of the metal. The graphite enhances the desirable properties of cast iron, improved casting & machining properties and better thermal conductivity.
3.1 Product Description
The Foundry is planning to produce basic gray iron products since there is no local supply and no adequate imported supply on the market at this point while potential demand is huge.
Hole Coverings used for coverings of all types of channels. They are delivered as a finished product that consist of shaft, frame with the handle and anticorrosive protection. Ladder parts needed for the walls of the shaft are also included.
Gratings used are sewage and rain gratings, bridge gratings and linear gratings of all dimensions.
Castings for agricultural tractors used to support local tractor production.
Castings used as manual agricultural tools to stop imported overpriced current supply from export.
Other moulds that are to be produced on customer demand.
3.2 Competitive Comparison
There is no local competition for gray iron products, however potentially castings made in China will be significantly more expensive, comparing to those to be produced in the Foundry.
3.3 Sourcing
The Foundry will purchase raw materials, scrap iron and steel from local suppliers and will leverage its purchase department to secure best spot prices.
.
4.0 Market Analysis Summary
Guinea Bissau is geographically situated in the junction of major east-west and north-south transportation routes. It can be also referred as the "center of opportunity" with benefits created by Free Trade Agreement of Central Africa.
Facilities of the Foundry are accessible via xxxx corridor and major railroad traffic suitable for transportation of both raw scrap metals as materials for further melting and processing as well for the shipment of final goods, gray iron castings.
Gray iron casting for the Foundry represents an ideal business and a logical product portfolio. By utilizing average price for gray castings of € 1.05 per kg for manhole coverings and other castings to be sold, the gray iron casting business has the potential of 7,000 tones of molded casts in the fifth year of operations giving it revenue of € 7,35m in terms of sales.
Major buyers for gray iron will be mainly public utility companies from the neighboring countries, local public companies as well as agricultural tractors producers.
The Foundry will offer gray castings under competitive pricing due to the lower production costs comparing to other foundries abroad and cheaper shipment costs comparing to the imports.
4.1 Market Segmentation
Gray iron castings, due to its flexibility and elasticity found appliance in a number of various industries. However, gray castings refer to water and sewer lines as well as in the tractor production as components where strength needs surpass that of aluminum.
Based on the above mentioned information, it is anticipated that the gray iron market can be divided into two customer segments. The first segment refers to the water and sewer castings that include manhole circular and square covers, sewage and rain gratings and the second segment that obviously include those that use gray iron castings as components for tractor production.
The Foundry will at the beginning partially target first market segment in neighboring countries as well as the castings for manual and tractors agricultural production.
4.2 Target Market Segment Summary
The Foundry will target first domestic needs in manual agricultural tools, agricultural tractors producer, road sanitary drainage castings, i.e. manhole covers, gratings and other infrastructural iron castings. Should Foundry succeed to produce adequate castings, this will prove to be more than enough to completely occupy entire annual production.
5.0 Marketing Strategy
The Foundry will provide gray iron castings for the local agricultural tractors production, secureing successful start of the operations.
Nevertheless, according to the potential needs of the customers in the neighbouring countries, the demand for gray iron castings will be more than sufficient to fully employ entire production capacity projected at 7,000 tons at fifth year of production.
5.1. Distribution Strategy
Castings for agricultural tractors will be supplied directly to the local Tractor Production Company.
Other products will be distributed either directly to the customers from the Foundry, or through a dealer network in the neighbouring countries.
However, the Foundry envisage a creation of small fleet of mid sized transportation vehicles for “just-in-time” delivery of products to the customers in the country, on their demand.
5.2. Pricing Strategy
The Foundry plans to offer ductile iron castings under favorable terms to the customers targeting same or 10% lower price ranges for different castings compared to those imported from China.
The Foundry will purchase raw materials, particularly scrap iron from local suppliers which will enable to reach such price range. In addition to that, main challenges to the Foundry to reach such price range will be the price of other raw materials that have highest percentage in the price of final goods.
6.0. Management Summary
The Foundry will leverage local management and the workforce that will be educated and trained on the equipment to be transferred to Guinea Bissau.
