4.5.1 Salinity
An environmental factor that is not itself a resource, but which reduces the rates of acquisition of a resource, can be called a regulator. Cold, salinity, and acidity are all examples of regulators. In salt marshes and mangal, salinity and flooding act as regulators (Frey and Basan 1978, Niering and Warren 1980) (Figure 4.23). Plants therefore occur in discrete zones associated with specific elevations and salinity (e.g., Poljakoff-Mayber and Gale 1975, Tomlinson 1986, Adam 1990).
To understand how salinity creates a form of drought, one must appreciate that evapotranspiration creates osmotic gradients within plant tissues. The water deficit in the leaves is transmitted down the plant through the xylem, thereby causing water to diffuse into roots (Salisbury and Ross 1988). The greater the salinity, the stronger this osmotic gradient must be to extract water from the soil. Water deficits in photosynthetic tissues can be measured with a pressure bomb, and Figure 4.24 shows that plants growing in salt water have much greater negative tension in their xylem. Other consequences of elevated salinity are shown in Figure 4.25.

Perhaps it is possible to entirely reverse the suggested cause and effect and argue that a completely independent factor, such as grazing, produces vegetation patterns and that the observed physiological properties are simply pragmatic evolutionary responses to the conditions that are present. While few ecologists would deny that the physiological traits of organisms represent evolutionary responses to stress, these traits still do not demonstrate whether physiological differences are the cause of zonation or merely an effect. Field experiments are required for this. In saline plant communities, several such experiments have now been conducted.
In Alaskan salt marshes there are four zones that can be delineated as elevation increases (Jefferies 1977, Vince and Snow 1984): outer mud flat (Puccinellia nutkaensis), inner mud flat (Triglochin maritima), outer sedge marsh (Carex ramenski), and inner sedge marsh (C. lyngbyaei). At one extreme, the outer mud flat with P. nutkaensis is flooded some 15 times per summer for periods of 2-5 days each, creating soil water salinity of 15-35 percent. The inner sedge marsh with C. lyngbyaei is flooded only twice per summer, when a new or full moon coincides with the perigee (although this single flood may last more than 5 days), and soil salinity is only 6-11 percent, slightly below the 12 percent of flooding sea water.

4.5.1 Sótartalom
Azokat a környezeti tényezőket nevezhetjük szabályozóknak, amelyek önmagukban nem szolgálnak forrásként, azonban csökkentik a források hozzáférhetőségének mértékét. A hideg, a sótartalom és a savasság mind ezt példázzák. A sós mocsarakban és mangrove erdőkben a sótartalom és az áradás játszanak szabályozó szerepet (Frey és Basan 1978, Niering és Warren 1980) (4.23 ábra). Ezért a növények a meghatározott tengerszint feletti magasságnak és sótartalomnak megfelelően különálló zónákban fordulnak elő (pl. Poljakoff-Mayber és Gale 1975, Tomlinson 1986, Adam 1990).
Ahhoz, hogy megértsük, hogyan idéz elő a sótartalom egyfajta szárazságot, azt kell tisztán látnunk, hogy az evapotranspiráció ozmotikus gradienst hoz létre a növényi szöveteken belül. A vízhiány a xilémen keresztül lefelé terjed a levelekből, ennek következtében a víz a gyökerekbe diffundál (Salisbury és Ross 1988). Minél nagyobb a sótartalom, ennek az ozmotikus gradiensnek annál erősebbnek kell lennie, hogy vizet vonjon el a talajból. A fotoszintetizáló szövetekben fellépő vízhiány nyomáskamra módszerrel mérhető, és ahogy a 4.24 ábrán is látható, a sós vízben fejlődő növények xilémében jóval nagyobb negatív tenzió jellemző. Elképzelhető, hogy a valószínűsített ok-okozati összefüggés teljesen megfordítható és lehet, hogy egy teljesen független tényező, mint a legelés hozza létre a vegetációs mintázatokat, a megfigyelt fiziológiai sajátosságok pedig mindössze az adott körülményekre adott pragmatikus evolúciós választ jelentik. Noha kevés ökológus vonná kétségbe, hogy az evolúció az élőlények fiziológiai sajátságain keresztül reagál a stresszre, ezek a jellemvonások nem magyarázzák meg, hogy a fiziológiai eltérések okozzák-e a zonációt, vagy csupán úgy, mint következmény tekinthetünk rájuk. Ennek tisztázásához terepi vizsgálatokra van szükség. Jelenleg több ilyen kutatás is folyik a magas sótartalmú élőhelyek növényi közösségeit illetően.
Az alaszkai sós mocsarakban a tengerszint feletti magasság növekedésével négy zóna írható le (Jefferies 1977, Vince és Snow 1984): külső iszapos lapály (Puccinellia nutkaensis), belső iszapos lapály (Triglochin maritima), külső sásos mocsár (Carex ramenski) és belső sásos mocsár (C. lyngbyaei). Az egyik szélsőséget a P. nutkaensisszel borított külső iszapos lapály képviseli, amelyet nyaranta tizenöt alkalommal borít el a víz 2-5 napra, ennek következtében a talajvíz sótartalma 15-35%-osra nő. A C. lyngbyaei túlsúlyával jellemezhető belső sásos mocsarat nyaranta csak kétszer árasztja el a víz, amikor újhold vagy telihold idején a Hold földközelben tartózkodik (bár csupán ez az áradás több mint öt napig is eltarthat), a talaj sótartalma pedig mindössze 6-11 %-os, ami valamivel kevesebb, mint a tengervízzel való elárasztásra jellemző 12%-os érték.
