English to Chinese: God in pulbic, chapter two, first paragraph
Source text - English The last chapter indicates that accommodationists, particularly the nonprefer¬entialists, want too cozy a relationship between religion and public life. Govern¬ment should not play favorites between religions but, given American history, is allowed to favor religion over nonreligion. The nonpreferentialists, therefore, unduly privilege religious values over nonreligious values when it comes to mat¬ters important to the nation. Yet the last chapter also indicates that those who favor strict separation between church and state actually seek to privatize religion. Their defense of the metaphorical “wall” leads not only to the separation of the institutions of church and state but also to a separation of the ability of religious values to speak to matters related to public life. The strict separationists unduly privilege nonreligious values over religious values when it comes to matters important to the nation. Neither view is truly an acceptable interpretation of the First Amendment. One tends to violate the establishment clause; the other tends to violate the free exercise clause. This raises the question, Do these two parts of the First Amendment conflict with one another or speak against one another?
