BACKGROUND
Mark D. Murphy

Mark Murphy taught French language courses at the University of Minnesota from 1978 to 1980 before moving to Germany in late 1980 to study economics at the Albert-Ludwig-Universität in Freiburg, Germany.

During his two-year stay in Germany, Murphy established himself as a freelance translator before relocating to Paris, France to attend the École Supérieure d'Interprètes et de Traducteurs, from which he graduated in the spring of 1984 with a Diplôme d'Études Supérieures Spécialisées, a post-Master's level degree in interpretation and translation. From 1984 to 1986 he worked as a self-employed interpreter (consecutive and simultaneous) and translator. Major accounts included the Compagnie Générale des Eaux, France's largest utilities operator, and Alcatel Alsthom (formerly the Compagnie Générale d'Électricité), France's largest industrial conglomerate and manufacturer of electric and electronic equipment.

In 1986 Murphy entered the employ of the Coordinating Committee for Multilateral Strategic Export Controls (COCOM), a confidential, multilateral organization (the NATO countries plus Japan and Australia) based in Paris. Murphy was recruited as a senior translator-reviser and interpreter. His duties included, in addition to the revision of junior translators, the translation of a wide range of technical documents dealing with advanced industrial equipment and technology, both civilian and military (aerospace, lasers and radar, electronics, computers, and the like), together with speeches and policy statements as well as export controls and international trade regulations. He also provided consecutive interpretation of policy speeches and debates as well as technical discussions.

In September of 1991 Murphy left COCOM to return to the United States, where he has worked as a freelance interpreter and translator to the present day. His current focus is on legal interpretation and translation (paralegal Honors Certificate in International Trade Law from the American University in Paris and two-year law program at the Université Paris X - Nanterre in Nanterre, France) and interpretation and translation in a number of technical and scientific fields such as telecommunications (including several on-site interpretation-translation projects for AirTouch, formerly Pacific Telesis International) and computers (translation of documentation for Minnesota Technology Incorporated). Murphy has also translated general interest works, including two books.

Murphy is a member of the Association des Anciens Élèves de l'É.S.I.T. References available upon request.
