Portuguese to English: Modernism and Tradition General field: Art/Literary
Translation - English If we consider the aesthetic categories which regulated traditional modernity - genius, style, beauty value -, and which appears to be dominant even today, the 'essay' form is somehow exotic. The place it had been allowed to occupy is the same as the neutralized exilium reserved to modernism as a whole: just a particular style among many others, whose core aesthetical category is formal experimentalism. If the modernist work of art was engendered as a reaction against the stabilized forms of Tradition, then it must be questioned traditional aesthetic categories are able to deal with such work of arts without deforming them. It would be alarming to invest in an interpretative method simply incapable of perceiving its object.
English to Portuguese: Modernism and Realism General field: Art/Literary
Source text - English It is still very common to account the objective perception of the world and of human affairs as opposed to the subjective perception. In opposition to this common attitude, Adorno once wrote that the modernist narrator reliance on extreme subjectivity engenders its contrary: the recognition of the world of objects’ supremacy. Modern novels turned to be what he called negative epopees. Modernist artists are commonly criticized to have achieved, it is usually said, a deformed image of reality due to their reliance on a subjective perspective.
