이랜드(E-land) 그룹은 박성수 회장이 1980년 이화여자대학교 앞 작은 옷가게에서 시작되어 31년 만에 연매출 8조원, 재계순위 26위로 발전하였다. 이랜드는 창립 초부터 선진경영기법을 도입하여 생산은 '아웃소싱(outsourcing)', 마케팅은 '프랜차이즈(franchise)' 방식으로 운영하고 본사는 기획과 머천다이징(merchandising) 및 디자인 기능을 보유하는 차별화된 사업설계와 중저가 캐주얼 시장이라는 틈새시장을 개척, 선점하여 폭발적인 성장을 이룩하였다.

지난 1997년 초, IMF 위기가 닥치기 전 자체 구조조정에 착수한 결과, 탄탄한 재무구조를 갖추게 되었고 이를 바탕으로 이랜드는 2000년을 '지식경영'의 원년으로 삼아, 세계최고의 "지식회사"로 도약해 나갈 것을 공표하고 지속적인 노력을 기울이고 있다. 이랜드는 정직과 신뢰를 바탕으로 인류의 풍요로운 삶과 행복을 추구하는 믿음의 기업을 표방하면서 기업이 존재목적과 사회적인 기능을 기업 이익의 창출과 그 이익의 사회적 환원에 두고 이에 대한 적극적인 실천방법으로 계열사들이 출연한 자산을 통해 재단을 설립하고 다양한 사회사업 프로그램도 진행 중에 있다.

유익한 기업으로 성장하기 위해서 선택한 경영이념은 첫째, 기업은 반드시 이익을 내야 한고 그 이익은 바르게 사용되어져야 하며 둘째, 이익을 내는 과정이 정직해야 한다. 셋째, 직장은 인생의 학교이어야 하며, 넷째 소비자를 위해 운영되어야 한다는 것이다. 이 4대 경영이념 나눔, 바람, 정직, 자람을 의미하는데 이 중에서 가장 핵심이념은 정직으로 이는 과정의 정직함을 통해 사회 전반에 뿌리 내린 구조 악을 개선할 수 있다는 것이며 기업이 정직하게 이윤을 창출해야 하고 그 이익을 바르게 사용해야 한다는 나눔의 의미를 강조하는 것이다.

또한 이랜드 성공의 가장 큰 이유는 무엇보다 고객의 입장에서 기업을 경영했기 때문이다. 이랜드 그룹은 여러 차례의 경영 위기 때마다 새로운 비전인 구조조정과 지식경영의 도입을 통하여 이를 극복했으며 이러한 이랜드 정신은 18개로 구성된 이랜드 스피릿(spirit)에 잘 표현되어 있으며 일종의 행동강령으로 모든 직원들에게 전파되어있다. 즉 남과는 다르게 생각하고 타인 중심적 사고로 재능보다는 성실한 인재들이 돈보다 일 중심으로, 일보다 사람 중심의 미래지향적 사고를 가지고 절약, 정돈, 청결, 위생을 중시한 팀원들의 팀워크로 오늘의 월드비전을 갖춘 이랜드 그룹으로 성공할 수 있었던 것이다.

A small clothing shop opened in front of Ewha women’s university by Park, Seong Su 31 years ago grew to be E-land group now with top 26th businesses ranking and annual sales of 8 trillion won. E-land who adopted advanced management technology in its early stage could achieve explosive growth by differentiated business strategies such as production outsourcing, franchise marketing system and convergence of planning, merchandising and designing into the headquarter office and most of all, By pioneering and predominating the low and mid-price casual apparel market which had been the niche market.

Early in 1997 just before the IMF financial crisis, E-land carried out structural adjustment and as a result, its financial structure became strong. They further announced that 2000 would be the first year when they introduce knowledge management to themselves and they would jump up to be the best knowledge incorporation in the world, and have strive for it ever since.
Based on honesty and confidence, E-land, claiming to advocate a trustworthy company which pursues an abundant life and happiness, considered that raison d’etre and social function of the company should be not only making profit, but also returning the profit to the community.
In that sense, the company established a foundation contributed by its affiliates and its various social works are in full swing now.

Their corporate philosophy to become a beneficial company is that, firstly, a company should make a profit and the profit be used rightly, secondly, the process of earning profits should be fair, thirdly, the workplace should be a life school and fourthly, a company should be operated for consumers. Among the four titles of the corporate philosophy meaning sharing, desire, honesty and growth, the key idea is honesty, which means that deep-rooted structural badness in the overall society can be improved through honesty in the process, and emphasizes the meaning of sharing that a company must earn profits honestly and use them rightly.

The main reason for their success is that, they operated a business most of all from the customer’s angle. Whenever a crisis in business hit them, E-land group overcame through restructuring and knowledge management.
Such mental attitude of E-land is well expressed in E-land Spirit consisting of 18 articles, which is a sort of a cord of conduct among all staffs.
In other words, each member with a future-oriented thinking who is rather sincere than talented, thinks differently and at the same time in others’ shoes, lays stress not on money but work itself and furthermore, rather human than business without neglecting saving, tidiness, cleanness and sanitary, on top of all these, with teamwork could make E-land group what they are today.
